Sandals & Fiddlebacks - Franciscan Traditional Latin Mass
YouTube ^ | 4/28/2008 | n/a

Formal fiddleback chasubles and modest Franciscan sandals come together in the Extraordinary Form of the Mass (Traditional Latin Mass) at Our Lady of Guadalupe Friary of the Franciscans of the Immaculate. The video is put to beautiful music from the Franciscan Sisters of the Immaculate, our sister order. The music was recorded in Italy and is a fine example of the high quality of their music which, combined with the friars in Italy, are playing a major part in spearheading the reform of liturgical music in Italy.

Catholic ping!
I should note that the music is an adaptation of a prayer by St. Francis. It’s sung in Italian, not Latin, though it’s in a Gregorian-chant type musical setting.

Hail, holy Lady, most holy Queen,
Mary, Mother of God, ever Virgin.
You were chosen by the Most High Father in heaven,
consecrated by Him, with His most Holy Beloved Son
and the Holy Spirit, the Comforter.

On you descended and still remains all the fullness of grace and every good.
Hail, His Palace.
Hail His Tabernacle.
Hail His Robe.
Hail His Handmaid.

Hail, His Mother. and Hail, all holy Virtues, who, by grace and inspiration of the Holy Spirit, are poured into the hearts of the faithful so that from their faithless state, they may be made faithful servants of God through you.

The music is gorgeous!

I asked a knowledgeable person about it, and apparently it was written by someone there. Several music directors in the US have been trying to get the music, but because the Italian government restricts the activities of non-profits, the monks haven’t been able to legally release or sell it. However, somebody here is helping them to find away around the red tape.

Very nice; of course, this is what the Liturgy in the West is SUPPOSED to look like...at least that’s what we Orthodoxers, from the EP on down, think.

Here’s a great link:

Ah, see how cunning the Evil One is, fooling the simple Orthodox grandson of simple Orthodox Greek peasants that way!

Still, Grasshopper, that’s the way I remember High Mass! :)

In fact, I’m heading to a Solemn High Mass this evening for Ascension Thursday offered by Fr. Paul Scalia, the son of Antonin Scalia.

Thank you, great link! Of course, here in my diocese, we are struggling with our bishop, who calls himself a “loyal son of Rome” when confronted on the issue, to get him to permit what the Pope has ordered (and over which our bishop technically has no control anyway).

We have yet to have a single traditional mass other than the single one celebrated or mumbled at 8:00 am in an inconvenient location by a somewhat dotty old priest who hates the TLM in the first place and takes every occasion to tell us so. It was originally the indult mass and the bishop almost cancelled it, but after rejecting hundreds of signatures in the diocese requesting the TLM in local parishes, he has decided to allow to this one limp along simply so he can say he permits it. That’s loyalty?

Sigh. I see these masses happening in every diocese but mine.

I don't know if it was an oversight or a typo, but here is a slight correction:

Ave, suo palazzo,
Ave, suo tabernacolo.
Ave, sua casa.
Ave, suo vestimento,
Ave, sua ancella.

Hail, His Palace.
Hail, His Tabernacle.
Hail, His Home.
Hail, His Robe.
Hail, His Handmaid.

The Franciscans of the Immaculate are a rare ray of sunshine streaming through the dark clouds of religious life today.
