Isn’t this guy the one who bashes conservatives every chance he can get? He’s trying to change Christians into good liberals who will value big government as a solution to leveling the wealth among all the people. No more need for that awful bad habit the Christians are currently recommending - Charity - it’s a bad word (The Gospel according to Hubert H. Humphrey).
TG, Wallis just has the whole thing backwards. He assumes that Christians who point out sin just do that and do not make a difference in other areas. Unfortunately some people do just that and that gives creedance to some of his criticisms, but there are others who do the whole gamut (preaching, works etc).
I never could get into Warren’s book, my general rule is that if it is wildly popular, and life changing, then it is a fad, and not solid teaching.
Better to pick up reading...the Bible...*gasp*...then some poppy book..though I have been dabling in Gary North’s Biblical commentaries lately...
yup!
Problem is... if it is a fad it is good to keep on top of it because of its encroachment into formerly well meaning churches by naive churchgoers.
I know. :-)
And there are those athiests and other people who do all kinds of good works but never speak the truth of salvation, and so basically just make people more comfortable while they are on the road to hell.
That’s him! his choirboys are Tony Campolo, Brian Mclaren, Tony Jones, Rob Bell... all of whom have a substantial following. The church these days is so deluded. They claim conservatism while toeing the moderate-to-liberal line.

To: piasa; Liz; kattracksMr. Wallis, the founder and editor of the Christian magazine Sojourners
Sojourners is not a Christian magazine except by the loosest definition of Christianity. It's a front for antiwar infiltrators of the theological community of the Daniel Berrigan/Robert Drinan type. I posted some more on them here starting at Post 25:
Kerry's Choice for Religious Outreach Director 'Confounding,' Group Says
See esp. Post 31:
From S. Stephen Powell, Covert Cadre: Inside the Institute for Policy Studies, 281-3:
Sojourners was founded by Jim Wallis in 1976, the offspring of the Post American, which was published by a few radical theology students who banded together commal-style in Chicago in the late 1960s. Encouraged by Richard Barnet [of the Institute for Policy Studies], Gordon Cosby [of World Peacemakers], and others, Wallis decided to move his ragtag Christian hippie community to Washington. Barnet's influence was soon felt at Sojourners, for after Wallis moved the Sojourners commune to Washington and came in contact with IPS, the appearance of the magazine improved and its rhetoric was toned down. But when Wallis addresses his colleagues in the elite theological circles, he makes no effort to conceal his politics. He told Mission Tracks in 1979, in the article "Liberation and Conformity", that he hoped "more Christians will come to view the world through Marxist eyes. . ." [SNIP]Also see Post 25 on some related figures among the religious left.
The U.N. Special Session on Disarmament of 1978 was to be an extravaganza for peace activists throughout the Western world. . .The entire endeavor had been conceived and approved by the World Peace Council in 1975, based on the Soviets' perception. . .Never mind that nothing specific on disarament resulted from the special session. What did emerge were some organizational vehicles for "the movement"--Mobilization for Survival, the Riverside Church Disarmament Program, World Peacemakers--all of which "IPS fellows were instrumental in organizing", as an IPS annual report pointed out. . .
The theme of the March 1978 Sojourners issue was in keeping with the campaign being promoted by World Peacemakers. . .

They are all marxist liberation theologians. Pope B XVI and JP II wrote extensively about this and speak up against it. I think it is a matter of time and Fr. Phleger will be excommunicated.
That’s why its key for Christians to become involved and show that we have “treasure within these earthen vessels”. There is a huge difference that comes from the power of God that greatly differentiates the Christian from these types of folks.
However those who are faithfully serving AND preaching the truth will not be honored and noticed in the world. Jesus says we are not to draw attention to our good deeds, so it makes sense that people who are not interested in the truth would say that the church is sitting around doing nothing but criticizing.
Yup Wallis is a marxist. And he thinks Rick Warren is great. (Who people try to say is ‘conservative.’)
No it does not make sense TG because FAITH WITHOUT WORKS is DEAD!!
“Jesus says we are not to draw attention to our good deeds”
Or does He from his own mouth?
Matthew 5:13-20
13 You are the salt of the earth; but if the salt has become tasteless, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled under foot by men.
14 You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden; 15 nor does anyone light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on the lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. 16 Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven.
17 Do not think that I came to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I did not come to abolish but to fulfill. 18 For truly I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not the smallest letter or stroke shall pass from the Law until all is accomplished. 19 Whoever then annuls one of the least of these commandments, and teaches others to do the same, shall be called least in the kingdom of heaven; but whoever keeps and teaches them, he shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.
20 For I say to you that unless your righteousness surpasses that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will not enter the kingdom of heaven.
Note that it doesn't say : Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good works, and glorify you."
I fully understand that, don’t play semantic gymnastics with me.
