wheat will be separated from the chaff. Those amazing statements from bishops prior to the election are a precursor to much more heroic shepherding to come.

I sure hope so. The big problem is that the bishops are a mixed bag. Raymond Arroyo spoke to several bishops at the recent USCCB conference who told him that they suspected that as much as 50% of their fellow bishops had voted for Obama. That means that there is a tremendous amount of disloyalty and heresy even in the heirarchy (as if we didn't know that!).

It was about growth. With the advent of the moral relativism of the 60’s 70’s and 80’s society, the membership in Churches were in decline. To keep member numbers up and to grow them, the Churches went soft.
Marrying homosexuals, lesbian ministers, drive through religion.
The Word was watered down so as to not scare of a society that had become spineless, lazy and wanted it all and wanted it now.
So as we (America) turned our back on God, God responded by allowing us to see the conseqeunces.
So we now have a society that not only supports but pushes murdering babies but protests and riots at the thought of the death penalty for a convicted child rapist / murderer.
We have a media/society that HATES Christians and people of faith but attacks you if you do not agre with the Homosexual Agenda.
We have a nation that elects an unkown socialist to run a Free Constitutional Republic.
Seems to me we are getting exactly what we have asked for and probally deserve..

I think you overstate the influence of Bishops in the modern Catholic world. The Church made a significant strategic error when it tried to impose its views on Catholic women in Humanae Vitae 1968. The publication of this encyclical is frequently cited as beginning the decline of the Magesterium. At the same time the influence of the Bishops and Clergy in the everyday choices of the laity was significantly diminished.

I think the Church is making a terrible mistake if it tries to impose its will on the political agenda. If they continue in this direction they will only increase the animosity of Catholic women towards the Church. They were lucky to keep the number down to 54%. If it were not for Catholic males the numbers would have been much worse.

The strong teaching especially fell deaf on the ears of those who don't regularly attend church - now a majority of Catholics.

Wht do these people identify themselves as Catholic ?

If the Shepperd's are faithful the flock will be faithful.

Poor leadership for many, many years.
