Turning Sour Grapes into Wine: Vandalized Catholic Bookstore Ups Pro-Life Efforts

By Patrick B. Craine

HALIFAX, Nova Scotia, September 14, 2010 (LifeSiteNews.com) – A volunteer-run Catholic bookstore in downtown Halifax, Nova Scotia that has been subject to increasing vandalism due to its promotion of life and family has responded by raising its voice even louder in encouraging locals to get more involved in pro-life activities.

On Saturday, the windows at Veritas Catholic Books & Gifts were pasted with pro-abortion posters advertising “underground abortions.”  The posters were posted so as to cover up an ad for the local 40 Days for Life campaign.

In recent months the store’s windows have been scratched and plastered with hard grease to cover up promotions of natural family planning, post-abortion healing, and the 40 Days campaign. Vandals have even smashed the door lock and injected glue into it to prevent the door from being opened.

But far from backing down, store manager Lucian Bianchini is using the incidents to call for Catholics to take the message of life and faith to the streets all the more.  “We are not giving up on our freedom and what we believe,” he told LifeSiteNews.

In a letter to the priests of the Archdiocese of Halifax, Bianchini urged them to encourage their parishioners to bring their faith into the public square.  “It seems evident ... that there are groups of people intent on pushing Catholics back into the sacristy,” he wrote, after relating the vandalism.

“These facts are reported to you so that parishioners may be informed and encouraged to take part in activities which bring Catholics outside the Church in large numbers: the FORTY DAYS FOR LIFE comes to mind,” he wrote.  “We should not be silenced.”

Veritas has informed the Halifax Regional Police of the vandalism, and Bianchini says the police are concerned and have advised the store to improve security.

Bianchini said he is worried that the vandalism could escalate, but cautioned against overstating the gravity of the attacks.  “These people have created embarrassment and nuisance to us, and they are targeted nuisances,” he said.  “They know what they want to do.  But they haven’t destroyed anything except one poster.  They haven’t created a loss.”

LifeSiteNews.com did not hear back from the Archdiocese of Halifax by press time.

When I worked in New York City, I had all my pro-life bumper stickers peeled off one night. The only thing about that was that I lived next door to Priests for Life, which is where I worked.

I believe, I had parked near the Priests for Life side of my parking lot.

There are just parts of this country that are very pagan.

New York City, the last time I looked, had 786 abortions per 1000 live births -- almost a 1:1 ratio between live births and abortions. I believe in very conservative parts of the country that is about 50-75 abortions per 1000 live births. I believe it was the CDC that kept track of these numbers.

That was a hate crime. Just like putting a ham sandwich on a table with members of the religion of peace was a hate crime.

Good luck in getting recognition. These thugs brought me over to the light, so I’m eternally grateful for their intercession.

Who wants to have these idiots on your team?

There was a case, I believe in the 1990's where the libs trashed a Cathedral and almost knocked over some very elderly nuns to go around trashing the Cathedral.

Some of the nonsense was putting used condoms on the walls of the Cathedral...

I don't mind bashing homosexuals and other libs after reading what happened to that Cathedral...

While they apparently don’t want to make a big deal out of it, it is a big deal, and a potentially dangerous one as well. A serial vandal has better than average potential to become physically destructive and violent.

What will be too much? Felony vandalism? Arson? Violent assault? Attempted murder? Assassination?

The minimum they should do is to post discreet security cameras, which are inexpensive and available. At least so the attackers are identified. It may mean the difference between being approached on the street by a stranger you recognize as a threat, and one you don’t, who then stabs you with a knife while smiling.
