There was no religion forum in the beginning.. but there were always religious/doctrinal debates on the site. The Religion forum grew out of that fact...some objected to the religion on the site so JR set aside a specific forum so those that did not want to be "bothered" with them did not have to see them .

Religion was one of the factors leading to the foundation of America.. so not wonder it remains a conservative interest

Ahhhhhhh. The good old days. I remember when you could have great exchanges of deeply held convictions ... and not have to worry about who was offended. Then it got so PC that it wasn't even worth responding anymore. When I was a child, my mother taught me well: "Sticks and Stones may break my bones BUT WORDS CAN NEVER HURT ME."

That being said, I sure do miss those days :)
