Harold Camping Spent Around $100 Million on Rapture Ads
The Atlantic wire ^ | 24 May 2011 | Caitlin Dickson

Posted on 05/24/2011 11:13:58 AM PDT by Cronos

This shockingly large number comes from Matt Tuter, international projects manager at Family Radio--the California-based Christian organization that falsely predicted the world's end this past weekend--in an interview with the Christian Post.

The bulk of the $100 million, Tuter insists, came from selling off property (their KFTL television station and a FM station), fu although there appear plenty of people who donated their life savings to the cause. Tuter, whose family first got involved with the Family Radio organization when he was a baby, was also sure to clarify that "I remember when the organization was normal!" Apparently, this was before Harold Camping became a Doomsday prophet. Tuter adds that Camping "has actually made at least 10 predictions for the end times, though only a couple were announced publicly."

True, why didn’t they give me that money instead? ;-P

on a serious note — I do feel sad for the folks duped, but the sad thing is that they should have known — Camping has done it before and will do it again if he lives longer.

His recurring spew of high-grade manure is at least as much about collecting money, controlling followers and drawing attention to himself as it is about religion. I’m sure he believes in his predictions at some level but his accrual of followers and their money/support is what reinforces his view that he is truly on the right track.

Who knew that the end of the world would actually help the economy!

Yeah, but it probably wasn’t his money. It was money from dupes, and they are probably not through being duped.

You’re right they should have known. But they fell for it. This ‘no good’ apparently mixed a bit of truth in combination with his twisted logic that many fell for it.

The most heartbreaking story I read:

Now he’ll have to have an end-of-the-world debt retirement fundraiser. And maybe start a new fundraiser for the next end of the world.

Before everybody jumps on Pastor Camping, just a reminder:

$100 million is about the same amount that President Obama spent advertising the “stimulus”. BOTH were equally based in reality and had similar results.

Just sayin’.

I’d like anyone and everyone associated with Family Radio to be assigned to write an essay on the topic of Epistemology.

Best idea I’ve seen related to this pathetic situation. Some wise man (Chesterton or Lewis?) said. “A thing worth thinking about is worth thinking all the way through”

There is a famine of logic and reason.

The one Scripture that our Lord made sure was included in his telling of the signs of the end of the age (only My Father knows) should convince any serious person that date setters are preaching another gospel.

“A little leaven leaveneth the whole lump”

In the wee-hours of lare nite insomnia, I went looking for Mr. Camping’s TV program last nite.

Mr. Camping was back on “Open Forum”.

The program platform was different, in that there was some media people present, to which he said he would answer questions after he gave a statement.

I didn’t watch for very long.

He said he needed to make an apology and then offered what I thought was a non-apology.

Then he said with respect to his “error”, he was only half wrong. After his immediate explanation for that, I quit watching.

His immediate explanation was that:

yes, the rapture did not take place on May 21, but the “five month period of tribulation culminating in the end of the world in October 2011” (his theory) will still take place.

I listened no further.

I'm sorry you're disappointed, folks. But you should have stopped listening to him after his first failed prophecy, and instead read your Bibles:

Matthew 24:36 -“But of that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels of heaven, but My Father only.

Deut. 18:22-"when a prophet speaks in the name of the LORD, if the thing does not happen or come to pass, that is the thing which the LORD has not spoken; the prophet has spoken it presumptuously; you shall not be afraid of him."

That's what you get for following a charismatic man, instead of God's Word. That's why He gave it to us.

At least he’s still breathing. Near Kalamazoo, MI, a bunch of teens were celebrating the NON-destruction of the world. Perhaps on a dare, one 17 yr old—who couldn’t swim—jumped into the water and was taken away by fast moving waters.

>>The family of 17-year-old Anthony Thompson is reeling in grief at the likelihood that he drowned Sunday when he took a friend up on a dare to jump into the Kalamazoo River to celebrate that Harold Camping’s “Rapture” prediction was wrong and the world wasn’t coming to an end...Anthony’s good friend Jordan Skinner-Knapp was in the water trying to save his friend, but the current was too strong and he wasn’t able to hold on. People watched in terror as Anthony struggled in the water, screaming and waving his arms begging for someone to save him.
Emergency workers were called to the scene and immediately began searching for Anthony. They used jet skis and boats, but didn’t find anything.

I predict we would all be rich if we had been able to bet against all of the false prophets over the centuries.
