They have to keep on “working” in hopes that they have earned enough credits in order pay the balance. Of course they do - it's all they have left without the true, biblical Jesus. They are stuck like Sisyphus, having to "pay off" their sins over and over and over and over and over. . . never leaving the cycle, all for the fake promise of godhood.
