I wonder if y'all could help me with this. Are the targums considered Scripture by Jews? How do they compare with the text of the Tanakh? Thanks

The holy writ is the original Hebrew.

Targums are translations from Hebrew to Aramaic. Because of the antiquity of several of them, they are of great interest to serious students, but are not in any way authoritative.

Thanks. I have been receiving emails from the Messianic Prophecy Bible Project. I think they are doing something very exciting, translating a whole Bible into modern Hebrew, highlighting the messianic prophecies, and showing how Jesus fulfilled them. Hopefully, when ready, the Bibles will be given away in Israel. Anyhow, in today's update it said that they were currently working on the translation of the Aramaic Targum. I googled it, and read an English translation of the first couple of chapters of Genesis. It was strange, there were too many things added... but then, I've never had a chance to read the Tanakah in English, so I didn't know.
LOL, I am not Jewish or considering converting. I just love learning more about God's word, and reading the Tanakah is one of my goals. If I ever get the time, I would love to learn Hebrew also! Crazy? Of course!

The Targums are a commentary on the Scriptures and are not on the same level as Scripture.

If you are serious about the G-d of Israel, then study Torah. You will find Him and Moshiach in every line. You can but a Chumash (set of the five books) with Rashi’s commentary for about $110. You will learn that Torah is eternal, never changes, and is essential for understanding your life mission. Read Psalm one to get oriented and then “Lech lecha!” “Go, go for yourself!”

reading the Tanakah is one of my goals. You can read a good version of the Tanach online here:

I would avoid that messianic prophecy Project. They are only trying to change the word of G-d and paint Jesus into the Jewish scriptures.

So does your book exclude Genesis 3:15? No, of course not and Gen 3;15 has nothing to do with the man from Nazareth.

No, of course not and Gen 3;15 has nothing to do with the man from Nazareth. But of course it does, the first part of the first prophecy has taken place, His heel was bruised, but the next part is yet to take place. Every soul created must have their opportunity to pass through this flesh age first.

Right.....for those who believe in shooting an arrow into a tree and then painting the bullseye around it. What kind of tree? There was the 'fig' tree, (you know, the first described clothing came from), oak groves, a bramble tree, and a 'box' cedar tree, along with the olive and a Cedar of Lebanon... noted as types. Also a tree of the knowledge of good and evil, and that one that is called since the beginning, the 'Tree of life'.

Some Christians serious about studying Torah have learned Biblical Hebrew and seriously learned the Jewish sources in their original Hebrew. Though not their intention, the result of serious study of the original Hebrew sources for a good number has been their converting to Judaism and becoming enthusiastic Orthodox Jews. They went into their study with preconceived notions that they came to realize were mistranslations and textual distortions. I personally know such God-fearing people, including former ardent Baptists, Roman Catholics, Seventh Day Adventists, and Mormons.
