Former Archbishop Dolan says Mass at Holy Hill
New York Cardinal Timothy Dolan drew a large crowd of Catholics and well-wishers to Holy Hill on Saturday for a special Mass of Thanksgiving, some arriving as early as 4:30 a.m. to ensure a spot in the historic Basilica of the National Shrine of Mary Help of Christians.
The enthusiastic throng filled the basilica hours before Dolan celebrated Mass there, and hundreds of others spilled into the chapel on the lower level, where they watched the service on big screens. He later greeted those who had gathered in the lower chapel.
In his first visit to the archdiocese since his elevation to cardinal in February, Dolan enjoyed standing ovations and called his elevation to cardinal a tribute to Catholics in southeastern Wisconsin.
"You stood with me those . . . years, and I return a grateful friend," Dolan an enthusiastic crowd. "I love you all very much. This red hat is for you."
Hours before the Mass, hundreds of Catholics of all ages gathered out of the rain in a heated tent awaiting admission to the church. They came from Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa and beyond. They spoke of Dolan as a "holy man," and some voiced hope that he might be the first American pope.
"He's amazing. He's the Bishop Sheen of our time," said Julie Rueker of Peoria, Ill., who arrived in town with her daughter and son-in-law late Friday and arrived at the shrine before dawn.
"To hear him talk and see him in person, it's very special," she said.
"He's such a wonderful face of the church," said Terry Boldin, who, with husband Dick and the blessing of then-Archbishop Dolan's, founded the Rosary Evangelization Apostolate as a way to bring Catholics closer to their faith.

FReep Mail me if you want on, or off, this Wisconsin interest ping list.
Promiinent Republicans scored some highly sought after seats at the Mass Dolan said at Holy Hill. Pictured are US Rep. Paul Ryan (with his daughter?), US Rep James Sensenbrenner; and Wisconsin State Governor Scott Walker.
We know His one holy Church will always have a lot of work to do - but we also know He always raises up good men to lead us in doing that work!
That has to be Paul Ryan’s daughter. She looks like his sister!
From your lips (keyboard) to God’s ears!
My wife and I were speculating that our home town boy (Cardinal Dolan was born and raised in St. Louis), might one day be Pope.

Isn’t everybody? According to his brother (Bob), however, that is a subject NOT to be discussed.
All I know is that he is a wonderful man and we were blessed in the Milwaukee Diocese to have him here to lead our Diocese out of some very troubled times. We miss him every day.
Dolan was the last Cardinal to see obama in the white hut before the methane from the Marcellus Shale blew him back to kenya.
If you watched on TV or were lucky enough to be in attendance, you will know that Gov. Scott Walker received a VERY warm longgggg round of applause when Cardinal Dolan mentioned him, which warmed my heart.
Didn’t see Kathy Falk or Tom Barrett in attendance. chuckle, chuckle.
Great guys all...
Great picture, thanks for posting!
That truly is a humble beautiful Christian man. He does not have to do it. Just amazing Christian.

Good grief!! Repeats.
It was so good it was worth saying it twice! :-)
I have that book, autographed by Bob. Lovely.
He’s awsome too when he HEARS confession. There is no hurrying him.
When he first came to Milwaukee, he made it a point to visit every parish for Mass. He also came back to our church to hear confessions the first Eeaster he was here. There were about 6 other priests in attendance. After the preliminaries, people lined up in front of which ever priest they wanted to hear their confession.
Of course, everybody wanted the new Archbishop, so a long line formed in front of him. He had the center station. THe first person in line was an elderly lady — tiny in stature. This mountain of a man put his hand on her shoulder and leaned over her and heard her confession, and heard her confession and heard her confession. The line I was in progressed through about 15 people, and Dolan was still hearing the first, little, old lady.
Apparently, she really needed to talk, and he was willing to listen. I thought it was touching.
