The Fourth of July is a popular day of secular celebration. What’s wrong with that?

I thought of numerous secular holidays, but I would not put Independence Day among them.

“We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.”

I think the best expression for an atheist holiday, aside from April Fools’ Day, would be the muddled mess that was the old pagan May Day.

Technically, in the US, May 1st is “Loyalty Day”, and “Law Day”, though nobody calls it that.

But this was done in rejection of communist “International Workers’ Day”. However, since then, May 1st could be called “Soreheads Day”, used by Mexicans to protest immigration policy; labor unions to protest anything and everything; Occupy-Obamanites, to protest capitalism and the unwillingness of others to give them free stuff.

All told, still just as inconsequential as dancing around a Maypole before dashing off into the woods for a quick copulation in honor of nebulous fertility gods.
