Is Every Catholic Church a Parish?

Q: My wife, preschool son and I regularly attend Sunday Mass at the Shrine of –. My wife and I also go to confession there regularly.

Our son will be starting school next year… we discovered that there is no CCD of any kind being provided. The priest told my wife that instead, we have to take our son to St. – Church for Sunday School and First Confession/Communion preparation. We were flabbergasted! There aren’t many children who regularly attend Mass at the Shrine, it’s true. But aren’t they still required to provide religious instruction for the ones who do, instead of pawning the responsibility off on another church? –Steve

A: Steve is making an understandable yet erroneous assumption, that the shrine where he and his family attend Mass isn’t providing catechetical instruction simply because there are few children to instruct. But the canonical issue here is actually quite different.

Just take the kid to the next parish over, sheesh the Catholics are under satanic attack and don’t have that many people, so instead of whining, help

Public school, or a private Catholic school? I can only assume a public school, as a Catholic one would provide all the necessary education.

So this person's question is "why doesn't my parish offer everything?" I can only answer, "wake up to reality." Catholic dioceses in many area are consolidating parishes and services because they don't have the personnel or the resources. It's the way things are. You have to make due with what you have, and that might mean providing additional instruction at home.

Long ago the Catholic Church stopped worrying about teaching Religion in grade schools. They don’t have the Wonderful Nuns who gave their time without pay for the Love of Christ. Catholic education is the worse for that loss of dedicated People.I have had 12 years of Catholic education and I am the better for that. Both my children did not receive Catholic school Ed.’ they don’t have the strong background that my wife and I had.
There was no Room at the schools where we lived ever!
Great amounts of money was spent in legal battles over the last decade or more, More’s the pity.

Actually YOU as a parent are responsible for your child's religious education. Quit trying to pawn it off on another person.

My 8 year old granddaughter living in upstate NY goes to Catholic elementary school and so far is getting a great Catholic education. Starting in Kindergarden she started religious education and now in 3rd grade she knows more prayers than I do and goes to Mass every Friday (in school).
But the school is suffering from money problems and cut out the breakfast program a few months ago. My daughter got word last month that more Catholic schools in Western NY will be closing. They use to be all over the place. That’s a shame because although not as good as they use to be, they are still 1000 times better than any public education. Just a damn shame that Christianity is suffering all over the country, in all denominations.

Is Every Catholic Church a Parish?

Our parish has two churches about a mile and a half apart.
