Regarding Onan, the stated reason for the slaying was that he reneged on his obligation under the covenant he entered into.That's how I've always seen it. Onan basically enjoyed a roll in the hay without doing his duty. Also, people who see this story as being about contraception presumably believe it is a brother's duty to impregnate his brother's wife?

No: for one thing, it is impossible to guarantee impregnating. Some people are naturally infertile, and some times are naturally infertile..
We do that it is forbidden to intentionally impair the act of sexual union by frustrating its natural end.
