A YouTube commenter made this observation (not sure if I agree with it entirely): "He's right. As despicable as ISIS--and Islamic fundamentalism in general is--at least they've got the courage to lay it on the line. Christianity has been progressively wimping out over the last 500 years. And it's not just ISIS that God is using to punish the United States. Ebola, enterovirus, drought and fire in California, you name it. And if you think that God will not cause the destruction of a nation that offends him, try finding the Soviet Union on a modern map."

The Jewish Tanakh / Christian Old Testament makes this possibility clear. God certainly used unGodly thugs to kick the behinds of his chosen people who were disobedient to God.

The OT is good reading. If you haven’t read the entire thing (lately), this summer would be a good time to do so.

I agree.

It's interesting that when a religion comes along that is still pristine in its primitivism and uncompromising with the modern world that American chrstian conservatives regard it as an alien "left wing" entity (as do the liberals who support it). I'm astounded at chrstian conservatives who attack islam for "homophobia" and for not having been altered by the "enlightenment."

I don't want to send the wrong message here; I am anti-islam simply because it is a false religion. But to attack it because it doesn't conform to modern secular values? What business do conservatives have to do that?

Biblical Judaism was also Theocratic (in fact, the only truly Theocratic government that has ever existed in history). They executed "heretics" (actually idolators). And they made no distinction between "religion" and the rest of life, which was all regulated down to the smallest detail by Divine Law (something which conservatives attack in islam).

Yesterday a FReeper was attacking the idea of a "mythical" paradise at the beginning of history from which we fell as a leftist idea and praising modernism and rationalism.

I'll never get the do-si-do's so many conservatives execute. (The same goes for their liberal counterparts who do the exact same thing in the opposite direction.)

Isn’t being surrounded and harassed by flaming homosexuals punishment enough?

Back in the day when it looked like the Soviets were really going to jump ahead in space exploration, a cosmonaut remarked that he had been in orbit but saw no god. Khrushchev reported to the people: ‘there is no God’. Shortly after that their space program stalled out.

On Apollo 8’s epic journey to orbit the moon, the three astronauts took turns reading from Genesis, the first book of the Bible. We were the first to put a man on the moon shortly thereafter.

How that for God rewarding those who acknowledge Him in all their ways!

Not sure I agree with that. The “Westboro Baptist Church” is a small cadre of cranks—that for all I know might be financed by liberals to make people of faith look bad—that waves “God hates Fags” signs at funerals etc. Fischer at least is using proper biblical parallels to make his point. I wonder if he’s used 1 Kings 17-18 to make a point about the current killer drought in California (of course the libs would blame “climate change” for that).

It may down to the fact that killing people for having disagreeable ideas goes against the foundational principles of conservatism.

Odium abominationis, or loathing: The first-named species of hatred, in so far as it implies the reprobation of what is actually evil, is not a sin and may even represent a virtuous temper of soul. In other words, not only may I, but I even ought to, hate what is contrary to the moral law. Furthermore one may without sin go so far in the detestation of wrongdoing as to wish that which for its perpetrator is a very well-defined evil, yet under another aspect is a much more signal good.

For instance, it would be lawful to pray for the death of a perniciously active heresiarch with a view to putting a stop to his ravages among the Christian people.

You beat me to it.

My favorite story about Fred Phelps and his wackos happened in Mississippi about three or four years ago. A local soldier had been killed in Afghanistan and his body was returned home for the funeral. Naturally, the Westboro crowd showed up to protest.

They checked into a local motel the afternoon before. That evening, an 18-wheeler pulled into the lot, parking so it prevented the protesters from leaving. The next morning, the truck somehow broke down, so it couldn't move. Fred's acolytes tried to rent a car, but the local agencies said they didn't have any available. The cab companies were busy, too. Then, to top it off, a sheriff's deputy arrived at the motel and asked the Westboro folks to come to the station with him. There had been a report of possible criminal activity and the detectives wanted to ask them a few questions.

Naturally, it took the cops a few hours to get around to interviewing the protesters. After a little perfunctory questioning, they were finally returned to their motel and the tractor-trailer rig was gone. But they never made it to the cemetery; the funeral they planned to protest had ended while members of the Westboro crew were cooling their heels at the sheriff's office.

Over the years, a number of municipalities and groups took Phelps to court (and lost) because various judges upheld their right to protest—even at a military funeral. The folks in Mississippi got it right; they didn't need a judge to keep the Westboro crazies away; just a little creative thinking.

Fischer isn’t the first to make this point and it’s a very obvious possibility based on scripture. God used the Assyrians and Babylonians to inflict his wrath on Israel and Judah and the biblical prophets from Isaiah right up to the book of Revelation continuously warn that God inflicts his wrath for unrighteousness by Famine, pestilence and the sword. That’s what three of the 4 horsemen represent. It’s no stretch to suggest that God is using jihadist Islam for the same purpose now.

Where I think Fischer is wrong is to think God would inflict his wrath solely because of homosexuality. It’s just one of a smorgasbord of sins (homosexuality, abortion, idolatry, corruption of leaders, perversion of justice, theft, etc. etc.) which are so prevalent in today’s society and which easily justify the wrath of God.

"Not everything is a result of the Almighty."

I absolutely disagree - everything is a result of God. Not a sparrow falls to the ground apart from him. Where we go wrong is trying to ascribe reasons or worse yet, blame, for why the infinite God is doing what he is doing. That's pretty much the point of the book of Job.

Sounds more like this.

Rom 1:25 Who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator, who is blessed for ever. Amen.

Rom 1:26 For this cause God gave them up unto vile affections: for even their women did change the natural use into that which is against nature:

Rom 1:27 And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another; men with men working that which is unseemly, and receiving in themselves that recompence of their error which was meet.

Rom 1:28 And even as they did not like to retain God in [their] knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not convenient;

Rom 1:29 Being filled with all unrighteousness, fornication, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, debate, deceit, malignity; whisperers,

Rom 1:30 Backbiters, haters of God, despiteful, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents,

Rom 1:31 Without understanding, covenant breakers, without natural affection, implacable, unmerciful:

Rom 1:32 Who knowing the judgment of God, that they which commit such things are worthy of death, not only do the same, but have pleasure in them that do them.

I'm sorry, but I'm a bit confused.

Are you actually agreeing with this author that God is using ISIS for His will?
