The third day in the Bible is defined as the day after tomorrow.
According to Luke 24, the first day of the week ( Sunday ) was the third day since he was crucified.
If Sunday was the third day, Saturday was the second day and wait for it,
Friday had to be the day he died.

Yeshua makes two separate yet very similar statement in the book of Matthew, here they are.

Matthew 16:1 Then the Pharisees and Sadducees came, and testing Him asked that He would show them a sign from heaven. 2 He answered and said to them, “When it is evening you say, ‘It will be fair weather, for the sky is red’; 3 and in the morning, ‘It will be foul weather today, for the sky is red and threatening.’ Hypocrites! You know how to discern the face of the sky, but you cannot discern the signs of the times. 4 A wicked and adulterous generation seeks after a sign, and no sign shall be given to it except the sign of the prophet Jonah.†And He left them and departed.
The second statement has no 'three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.' Well, if you read from chapters 12 to 16 you'll find there's three days and three nights between these two statements!

Wicked and adulterous? You'd think they'd be in the same category but they're not. The wicked, well they are headed to Gehenom, nothing else to add there. The adulterous, married but they fool around, as in hanging out with Jezebel. I'm not going into all the verses here except to list a couple.
