Speaking about the Pope's remarks last week onboard the papal plane where he stated that "avoiding pregnancy is not an absolute evil," CBCP president Archbishop Socrates Villegas commented in a statement titled "Truth with Love and Mercy":

He (the Pope) however usefully called attention to two important moral precepts: First, there may be circumstances that invite a re-evaluation of the judgment on artificial means of contraception; second, the prodding of conscience should always be heeded, as long as every effort is made to form conscience properly.

Natural family planning is as effective as condom use, and nearly as effective as contraceptive pill use, assuming all methods are used correctly. It is not as effective as the “fool-proof” methods of implants and IUDs.

Given that an agreed upon and licit method exists to avoid pregnancy, why does the Pope feel the need to recommend artificial contraception? Couples where the woman is already pregnant might use condoms to avoid male-female sexual transmission of the virus, but that seems like it should be licit already, and explaining that to people who think condoms are always illicit might be of service.

There are women who don’t believe they can refuse their husbands/lovers for a few days. There are men who won’t take “wait” for an answer. There are women whose libido is far far higher when they are fertile, and have difficulty waiting. But isn’t that where the Church is supposed to say “Listen up people!”

In South America, contraceptive use is probably as prevalent as it is in any Catholic country, so the Pope is preaching to the choir, and going with the tide, to mix metaphors.

So this is what the “Catholic” bishops do.....confirm heresy rather than call it out.

Where is the much-beloved Burke and Schneider? Will they ever step up to the plate?

The best part of Francis’ recent remarks is that there seems to be a further waking up by fellow Catholics.
