A private funeral service has been held in Nebraska after fatal alligator attack at Disney World last week

The funeral of a two-year-old boy killed in an alligator attack in Florida has been held at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Nebraska.

Lane Thomas Graves was on holiday with his family at the Disney World resort in Lake Buena Vista, Florida when he was dragged into a lagoon by an alligator.

The boy’s father attempted to fight the beast off but was unable to rescue his son who subsequently drowned.

A Mass service was held in Lane’s hometown of Omaha on Monday in a private ceremony for family and friends.

According to the church’s website, the Graves family are members of the St. Patrick’s community and the boy’s older sister, Ella, attends their school.

A statement from Lane’s parents, Matt and Melissa, was also published on the church website. The couple write: “[We] are overwhelmed with the support and love we have received from family and friends in our community as well as from around the country.”

The family have set up the Lane Thomas Foundation in his memory. On the foundation website his parents say: “Losing Lane has broken our hearts in the worst possible way. While there is no way to mend our hearts, we can do good work in his honour.”

Donations received will go to a range of local charities in Omaha.

Alligators do actually serve a purpose in their natural wetlands habitat.

Though many people find alligators terrifying, the wondrous reptiles help maintain a critical balance in our ecosystem. They feed rapaciously on invasive nutrias, which cause horrific damage to wetlands by denuding their vegetation, and they also tunnel deep depressions that provide reservoirs during droughts. These "gator holes" can be a source of lifesaving water for fish, birds, turtles and other creatures.

Killing off all alligators to complete extinction is not the answer. I will say that conservation efforts that brought the alligator from near extinction has now gone too far and their numbers should be brought under control especially in populated areas.

But FWIW, in Florida, you are much more likely to be injured or killed by lightening than by an alligator.

I still say alligators should be hunted down to extinction.
what little ‘good’ they do by existing is far out weighed by the horrific harm they do; the killing of innocent human beings and pets.
It happens every day in Florida; an innocent, beloved dog is snatched by an alligator while its master walks by a river, lake or pond- or an innocent cat who has wandered too close to an alligator hangout is snatched. It is so commonplace that it is no longer reported.

They will never get a foothold in the area where I live.
When one pops up, he is never seen again.
What’s that they say,’shovel and shut up’?

We know a rancher with several ponds and a river on his property.
A gator snatched his dog one day. That gator ‘disappeared’- as do any who show themselves on his property.
Everybody around here does the same.

I’ve been to WDW any number of times (including its opening weekend in 1971) and never once considered alligators being on the grounds.

No swimming signs are one thing. There weren't any signs advising visitors of the likelihood of alligators.

I do my walking on a trail that parallels the Trinity River. It's often flooded in spots, thanks to climate change (lol, we're still affected by last year's "100 year flood").

Once, I braved a quarter mile stretch where the water came to my knees. I thought it was cool seeing turtles swim around me, until I remembered that water moccasins lived in the area.

I go around the flooded areas now.

A baby that age should be on dad's BACK, in a stroller or left HOME with a nanny/babysitter.

Are you saying that 2 year old children’s feet should never touch the ground? That they must be carried at all times or placed in a stroller? He was next to his father at a Disney event when he got taken by the alligator.

FWIW, the child was almost 3 years old, not exactly a “baby”. But yes. Children under the age of what? 4 or 5 or 8 or 10 or 12 years old, should be encased in bubble wrap or left at home in the care of a nanny/babysitter because every family has one. Or children under that age should be leashed, fenced in, never allowed to walk and never to be taken out in public or on a family vacation. / s

How did they EVER dream of this? It will probably end their marriage.

What an awful thing to say, re: their marriage. For the sake of their older daughter, as tragic and painful as this was, with love and support of their family and friends and their community and their faith in God, it may actually bring the family even closer together.

I've always thought that children THIS AGE are just fine with the local beach, lake and backyard baby pool. They DON'T know the difference and care NOT AT ALL...as long as they are with mommy and daddy.

As if something like this, an accident, couldn’t happen at the local beach, lake and backyard baby pool. Many more children die every year in backyard accidents and drown in home swimming pools than are killed by alligators.

We should probably ask for this kid’s intercession. No way he’s not a saint in Heaven now; no way he had any sin on his soul.

Anyway prayers for his family.

Disneyland, Anaheim, has NO alligators.
No, but I've seen hookers on Harbor Blvd.

Hookers are EVERYWHERE on the planet...everywhere there are smart pimps and stupid women.

Now, wait for all the do-gooders who will start lecturing and scolding me for say "stupid women." I'm a woman and KNOW what I'm talking about.

If you disagree with something I posted to you, say so in the forum, not by sending me a PM that says “Ignore button.”

You can choose to ignore me. That’s fine. But when you say stupid things as you have on this thread, I will comment. Get over yourself.
