In order to develop into a full-blown major world-wide religion, Islam would need super-natural support. Therefore, Mohammed’s trances must have been induced by a malevolent spirit who identified himself to Mohammed as Gabriel. Why couldn't he have made it all up?

Why couldn't he have made it all up? I think that's exactly what he did. The qoran is so phony, so cobbled together from pieces of Mo's limited understanding of Jewish and Christian theology and lore that it could not have been given to him by a spirit of any kind, demonic or otherwise.
