Baal meant "Lord" in the ancient Semitic language of Canaan and was applied to the principal god among the Canaanites, a god of storms and thunder called Hadad. They were Semitic speaking people (as were the Hebrews and Phoenicians) but were worshippers of idols, one being Baal. There is no direct link between Baal and Allah, as their cults are separated by thousands of years.

Allah more likely is related to one of the chief deities worshipped in Mecca, a Moon god whose physical presence is manifested in a large black meteorite that today is encased in silver and embedded in a cubical building called the Kaaba. That stone is what Muslims around the world pray toward five times a day. Every Muslim is obliged if financially able and healthy enough to travel to Mecca once in their life to participate in several days of rites centered around the Kaaba. This is called the Hajj, or pilgrimage, and is enacted yearly. So that thing I told you about Mecca and the business of religion? Only the name has changed over the door.

In what you might call the "Friendly Surras", those parts of the Quran (which by the way is divided by chapter-sura length, not chronologically as is most of the Bible) that refer to Jews and Christians favorably we are all referred to as "Peoples of the Book" (Ahl-al- Kitaab in Arabic) meaning all three have a Holy Book deriving from the same source, Yahweh, "I Am", Father in Heaven, or in their parlance "The God".

It's their belief that the Torah and the Christian Bible became corrupted over time and somehow the Quran (dictated to Mohammed in trances, who spoke it in what is admittedly some of the most beautiful flowing Arabic poetry, and then directly taken down a 'la a court reporter) is the latest and entirely true of the three "Books". They tend to ignore the innumerable contradictions, peaceful passages versus those instructing Muslims to murder, rape, and enslave being most glaring, and fanciful myths involving Centaurs and Genies.

Having done business in several Arab countries over the course of many years I had plenty of friendly relations with Muslims, from the nominal ones in places like Lebanon to the very committed and devout in Saudi Arabia. But I studiously avoided going beyond stating that I am a Christian and therefore "Ahl-al-Kitaab". Reminding them of that passage in their own book tended to close the discussion about religion so we could move on to business. But as a Christian Lebanese Arab business associate in Jordan once advised me, I never assumed if the impulse and the last sura in the Quran he read compelled him, that a Muslim friend couldn't turn on a dime and cut my throat.
