FULL TITLE: 'We don't want to make a man uncomfortable in church': Mother says she was told to leave a CHURCH for breastfeeding

A breastfeeding mother claims she was escorted out of a church service in Virginia and was told: 'We don't want to make a man uncomfortable in church.'

Annie Peguero has posted a video on Facebook about her treatment on Sunday at the Summit Church in Springfield and said she would never go back there.

Peguero, a personal trainer and military wife, said a church official told her: 'We don't want to make a man uncomfortable in church, and we also don't want to make a new churchgoer feel uncomfortable.'

That is a reasonable request. But if the baby was being quiet and not causing any disruption there really was no need for her to move. The act of breastfeeding in and of itself is not disrupting. It’s too bad if some men were uncomfortable.

My wife breastfed five of our six children in church at times. You can be very discrete about it and cover up...nothing is exposed.

WOW I fully agree with you that the age of the child is a big factor. If the church had a separate room, it should have been used, or at the very least, the woman should have gone to the back. There is something to be said for not trying to offend other people, just for the sake of exercising your own “rights”. I think this gal was looking for a fight or a way to promote breastfeeding in public.

Yep. It sure is not a case of an urgently hungry or fussy baby. The crying room would be the place to go or even a Sunday school classroom. I wish I had seen the age of the child before my first comment.

I would think a child that age is quite interactive when breastfeeding. Which makes it more difficult to have them keep quiet. People do have a right to a peaceful service when they go to church.

“Really? So taking a piss is equal to feeding a baby??”

Both are natural bodily functions that require us to uncover a sexual organ to perform, and that social norms dictate we perform in private.

“Under Virginia state law mothers have the right to breastfeed anywhere and there is no exemption for churches or other places of worship.”

She might be free to breastfeed anywhere, but she has no legal right to attend church services where she isn’t welcome :P

“If you can’t make a distinction between eliminating waste and nourishment...”

Let me tell you brother, you can’t have one without the other!

If the child is old enough to crawl up in the mamma’s lap and self serve the child is old enough to eat some animal crackers quietly.

I wonder why they call it a "nursery"?

A breast is first and foremost for the nourishment of infants, not a sexual organ. (That is the bonus)

I would prefer the baby room or my car. My baby gets way too distracted now when he nurses and pops off frequently.

Okay, I have questions.

How long has this woman been “attending” this church?

If the child is 19 months old, why hasn’t this come up before now?

This smells of a publicity stunt/setup.

You’re an ass. Urinating and defecating might be natural but they are NOT the same as breastfeeding. They are the elimination of waste products and are thereby dirty.

You’re completing disgusting for even suggesting that a woman breastfeed in a bathroom stall. Do you eat in a public bathroom stall? How foul and vulgar.

I have and do breastfeed in public, modestly. I keep covered as my breasts are private. I do not believe in these women who flash themselves proclaiming it’s a right to just whip out a boob. However, I don’t appreciate filthy pigs like you suggesting that an infant eat in a bathroom because you’re so offended by the sight of a feeding baby. Grow up. Do you chastise the teeny bopper bimbos who walk around flashing cleavage for all to see? Breasts aren’t for sex - they’re for feeding babies.

Oh my gosh...

Does this mean that there are very strict, very traditional churches?

Sexual organ? Breasts are primarily for feeding babies.

I nursed all three of my daughters and did so at church.

Guess what, no one ever knew, nor did my nursing expose my bare breasts and cause any woman or man feel uncomfortable!

I'd certainly feel if some woman opened her dress or top and unhook or snap her bra to expose her bare breast, insensitive and inappropriate in public!

If any mother believes the only way she can or should nurse her baby is to expose her bare breast to everyone, it's not about nursing a baby, but rather her desire to expose one's bare breast and her belief that no one should be shocked or offended at her semi-nudity!

As seems to be the case today, it really is "ALL ABOUT ME!"

Oh I agree, I wasn’t objecting in principle, but that doesn’t sound like the case here.
