Sr. Wendy Beckett said that Piss Christ contained a luminous Christ figure shining clearly and unstoppable through all the filth of this world. The light of Christ shines everywhere and all.
That gives Piss Christ a place in the narrative of the world of art without wasting a lot of anger on it. That seems healthier.
You are free to give it any interpretation you want. In fact, that’s heavily encouraged in most contemporary art centers. The artist is no longer the final arbiter of his work.
When this “art” was first introduced in 1987 there was a lot of controversy because it had received fundining from NEA. Jesse Helms and Al Damato railed against it and there was controversy when it was shown in other countries. But even 30 years ago the media was pure leftist and critics were dismissed as rubes or Christian fundamentalists.
The fact is the courts have consistently permitted anti-Christian and anti-Catholic blasphemy as free speech and there are no shortage of cases explaining why Christians (as the majority culture) had to accept the ability of people to ridicule their religion, as the cost for their having the ability to freely practice that religion. How times have changed.
We now have the same leftist scum simultaneously trying to brand as “hate” passages of the Bible that condemn homosexuality or Church teaching on the role of women, while condemning as “islamophobia” anyone who dares criticize the truly hateful and murderous cult of Islam. We should fully expect to see court decisions outlawing Christian teaching that offends liberals, and outlawing conservative criticism of Islam. It’s bizarro world.
The artist is mocking our Lord. If you are too stupid to see that, that’s your problem, noob.
If you believe that BS then I have some really nice waterfront property in FL to sell you.
