BEIRUT (AP) The Islamic State group, responsible for some of the worst atrocities perpetrated against civilians in recent history, appears on the verge of collapse.
After brutalizing residents living under its command for more than three years, the militants have now lost their self-proclaimed capital of Raqqa and are battling to hang on to relatively small pockets of territory in Iraq and Syria, besieged by local forces from all sides. Few, however, expect IS to completely go away, or for the bloodshed in the two countries and the region to end quickly.
Heres a look at the Islamic State group, the rise and fall of its caliphate and what to expect next:

THANK YOU PRESIDENT TRUMP! You are the greatest president ever!!
I'm guessing AP would prefer to go back to stability and people being beheaded and tortured.
Instability? LOL, whatever...
If obozo had a bunch of islomic sons.... when will the ISIS erect a memorial to obozo?
The AP preferred the stability of ISIS’ mass murder by the cruelest means that the demon-inspired imagination has ever perpetrated, much of which was disseminated by means of camera-phone video.
weird how obama the muslim, terrorist appeaser is out of the office, and we get a real pro American man who loves this country; then ISIS is now defeated.
mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm
Trump is definitely getting the job done. While his enemies are distracted by his “tweets” and the outrage of the day, Trump is slowly and steadily making good on all his promises.
They do have a significant point: “In many ways, the fight over IS spoils and territories is only just beginning.”
The super-evil of ISIS united so many pairs of long-time foes. Many conflicts were put on hold while the ISIS emergency sucked up all the oxygen in the room. With ISIS gone, they will be back at each others throats - and with special vigor, now that so many precious prizes are in play.
Their greed for oil riches, power and territory is only matched by their desire to deny them from those they have long fought.
Let the wild rumpus begin!
It already has, as we have just seen in Kirkuk.

“Trump is definitely getting the job done. “......
And his enemies hate it, the media ignores it so once again Free Republic comes through with the information. Words cannot describe the distain I have for those who call themselves “media”.
The bad part of winning is the destruction such “winning” has created. So much so that those “youthful” immigrants who have invaded so many European countries have no place, or anything to go back to. Hence the youthful immigrants will stay in the countries they have invaded and live a better life than what they left behind.
“Instability”?? The current “stability” is savagery not seen in hundreds of years as well as the intention to carry their war against Christianity to every corner of the earth? We should preserve the “stability” that ISIS has wrought? What insane leftist kook would even write such a thing?
I will be praying for an end to this atrocity and that God would prevent another group from rising up and filling the vacuum.
Behind whatever reasons ISIS had for committing the worst atrocities imaginable and slaughtering thousands of people are half a dozen other motivations and reasons the Islamists of the mideast will have to continue to slaughter and torment others and themselves. It’s in their nature as adherents to Islam. If there were no other religions in the world the mortal battle between Sunni and Shia would continue in some other form or format and be sufficient to produce as much or more butchery than we’ve already seen.
