A crucial step in recognizing Jews’ ancient right to their homeland

Quite a banquet will take place Thursday night in London to mark the centenary of the Balfour Declaration. That’s the letter in which Britain announced its support for the establishment in Palestine of what became the state of Israel.

The letter was sent a century ago to a leader of British Jewry, Lord Rothschild, from Britain’s foreign minister, Lord Balfour. The nub: “His Majesty’s Government views with favor the establishment in Palestine of a national home for the Jewish people.”

Its enormous impact was acknowledgment by the world’s then-mightiest empire of the legitimacy of Jewish claims to Israel. That the claims went back to biblical times was marked in the meeting where Balfour first began to grasp the power of Zionist rights.

The meeting, which took place at hotel in Piccadilly, was with Chaim Weizmann, who would eventually become the first president of Israel. Balfour, then a former prime minister, was running again for Parliament.

Balfour and Weizmann talked about the founder of political Zionism, Theodor Herzl, and the Zionists’ hostility to an offer of a Jewish homeland in Uganda. Weizmann said that if Moses had heard the Zionists considering that offer, he’d have broken the tablets again.

“Mr. Balfour,” Weizmann said, “supposing I were to offer you Paris instead of London, would you take it?”

“But, Dr. Weizmann, we have London,” Balfour replied.

“That is true,” Weizmann responded. “But we had Jerusalem when London was a marsh.”

Balfour leaned back and eyed Weizmann, who was a chemist with dreams of Zion. Then, Weizmann recalled, Balfour asked: “Are there many Jews who think like you?”

“I believe,” Weizmann replied, “I speak the mind of millions.” He meant the millions who for centuries clung to the promise, recorded in Genesis, of God to Abraham and his son Isaac and grandson Jacob.

Yeah, seems to me, God gave Israel to the jews, a very long time ago. It is good to agree with God.

"I will make you into a great nation, and I will bless you; I will make your name great, and you will be a blessing. I will bless those who bless you, and whoever curses you I will curse."

I know where I stand.

You are mistaken. This promise was made to Abraham.
1 Now the LORD had said unto Abram, Get thee out of thy country, and from thy kindred, and from thy father's house, unto a land that I will shew thee: 2 And I will make of thee a great nation, and I will bless thee, and make thy name great; and thou shalt be a blessing: 3 And I will bless them that bless thee, and curse him that curseth thee: and in thee shall all families of the earth be blessed. (Genesis 12:1-3)

Note the singular "thee" -- Abraham.

Further, only those who believe in Jesus Christ are counted for the seed.

6 Not as though the word of God hath taken none effect. For they are not all Israel, which are of Israel: 7 Neither, because they are the seed of Abraham, are they all children: but, In Isaac shall thy seed be called. 8 That is, They which are the children of the flesh, these are not the children of God: but the children of the promise are counted for the seed. 9 For this is the word of promise, At this time will I come, and Sara shall have a son. (Romans 9:6-9)

And who was the promised seed? Some think Isaac. Not so. The Bible does not leave this in doubt.

16 Now to Abraham and his seed were the promises made. He saith not, And to seeds, as of many; but as of one, And to thy seed, which is Christ. (Galatians 3:16)

And we believers appropriate this promise through Christ.

27 For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ. 28 There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female: for ye are all one in Christ Jesus. 29 And if ye be Christ's, then are ye Abraham's seed, and heirs according to the promise. (Galatians 3:27-29)

The covenant made with the Jews was conditioned on them keeping it.

3 And Moses went up unto God, and the LORD called unto him out of the mountain, saying, Thus shalt thou say to the house of Jacob, and tell the children of Israel; 4 Ye have seen what I did unto the Egyptians, and how I bare you on eagles' wings, and brought you unto myself. 5 Now therefore, if ye will obey my voice indeed, and keep my covenant, then ye shall be a peculiar treasure unto me above all people: for all the earth is mine: 6 And ye shall be unto me a kingdom of priests, and an holy nation. These are the words which thou shalt speak unto the children of Israel.

Take note of verse (:5) -- "if ye will obey by voice and keep my covenant...". They didn't. The kingdom of God was taken from them and a new covenant in the blood of Jesus Christ was made. Christ himself tells us what is going to happen.

42 Jesus saith unto them, Did ye never read in the scriptures, The stone which the builders rejected, the same is become the head of the corner: this is the Lord's doing, and it is marvellous in our eyes? 43 Therefore say I unto you, The kingdom of God shall be taken from you, and given to a nation bringing forth the fruits thereof. 44And whosoever shall fall on this stone shall be broken: but on whomsoever it shall fall, it will grind him to powder. (Matthew 21:42,43)

Modern, unbelieving Jews have absolutely no rights under the old covenant, nor do they have any "ancient right" to Palestine. God drove them from the land because of their unfaithfulness. And modern Israel does not believe on the Lord Jesus Christ.

You are mistaken. God promised the land of Israel to the descendants of Abraham for all time. Does God ever break his promises? If so we might as well both just stop going to church.

"You are mistaken. God promised the land of Israel to the descendants of Abraham for all time."

And who are those descendants? Do they include the descendants of Ishmael and Abraham's children with his second wife Keturah? Or are they his spiritual descendants, those who had faith in God's promise to make a seed a Abraham a blessing to all nations?

God was pretty clear in who He thought the descendants were;

Gen 22:2 And he said, Take now thy son, thine only son Isaac, whom thou lovest, and get thee into the land of Moriah; and offer him there for a burnt offering upon one of the mountains which I will tell thee of.

I don’t see any connection at all between that verse and the descendants mentioned on chapter 12. And anyway Esau was a son of Issac - So do the “descendant’s of Abraham include the Edomites?

If God says that is Abraham’s only son, then I can take that to mean those descended from Issac are the only ones recognized.

But you are free to imagine anything else you want to.

We all have something to learn when we see Jesus?

"If God says that is Abraham’s only son, then I can take that to mean those descended from Issac are the only ones recognized."

So are you saying the Edomites were recognized by God as sons of Abraham and also entitled to possess the promised land? Then why were they enemies of Israel for pretty much the entire Old Testament?

The Jews were there and lived there a long time before there was any such thing as a Muslim.

The Edomites were descendants of Abraham and Sarah.

Issac married Rebbeca and they had Essau and Jacob.

Edom/Esau was a son of Isaac, as was Jacob.

You are mistaken. God promised the land of Israel to the descendants of Abraham for all time.

He did and more. You are mistaken about just who these descendants are. Let me repeat.

16 Now to Abraham and his seed were the promises made. He saith not, And to seeds, as of many; but as of one, And to thy seed, which is Christ. (Galatians 3:16)

The promised seed is Jesus Christ. (God kept his promise).

29 And if ye be Christ's, then are ye Abraham's seed, and heirs according to the promise. (Galatians 3:29)

Only if you are Christ's are you in fact Abraham's seed and an heir according to the promise. It doesn't matter what one's physical descent is.

27 For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ. 28 There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female: for ye are all one in Christ Jesus.

These are not unbelieving Jews of questionable heritage.

What does “grafted onto the vine” mean if there is no vine? When Jesus said “salvation is of the Jews”, he said it in a spiritual sense as well as a real one. There is such a thing as culture and tradition that only belong to one people, whom I am not but can identify with as being “God’s people”. I live in the U.S., but should I also claim that little sliver of land that God has given to the Jews for all time?
