Martin Luther didn't want Christians to fight Islam under the guise of Christendom. Martin Luther correctly understood that the state has the sword. The purpose of the church is to spread the gospel and baptize, not to fight earthly battles. "For we wrestle not against flesh and blood"
While a unified Catholic war against Islam might have been more effective, it goes against reason and against the bible "For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits his soul?"
Imagine young men sent off to fight a war, holding the belief that a piece of paper from the Pope absolved him from any sin he might commit during war.
The ends do not justify the means. The church should not fight earthly wars. Christians are free to fight earthly wars through the state, but not the church.
