Army atheist yells, ‘God save me’, as shells explode

by Roger Griffiths

This article arose from an exchange of information between CMI’s translations facilitator Roger Griffiths and John T. Tolbert, an evangelist working with several language groups in Asia, primarily Vietnamese.

Published: 12 December 2017 (GMT+10)

John recalls, as a five-year-old, looking up at the sky, and realizing there must be a God. At 17 years, he joined the US Army, which was engaged in the Vietnam War. During basic training, an older colleague, hearing that John believed in God, gave him Mark Twain’s Letters from the Earth, which lampoons the Bible. John says, “Not having read the Bible, I fell for it, and became an atheist.”

In March 1969, he arrived in Vietnam and became an interpreter of Vietnamese. That period in his life had a huge impact, because he discovered that when the shells were falling around him and people were getting killed, “I was running for the nearest bunker praying, ‘God save me’!”...

Thank you, John, for going over there and battling the commie murderers.

That conveys to me at least, what must be the terror of being in danger of losing your life, especially in something as seemingly random as an artillery barrage.

A terror so encompassing where you probably begin to think that every shell is seeking you out, and the one that is going to kill you has already left the barrel and is coming directly to you...a terror so profound you would have no shame, being a committed atheist and wishing for God, the one you not only ignored, but openly and unabashedly denied the existence of, to save you from death.

I am certain there have been shelling barrages that have changed the lives of the survivors.

JOHN’S road to DAMASCUS moment. No doubt an answer to a mother’s prayers.

Then there’s also the fun fact that when you think you should run, you realize you can just as easily run to where the incoming shell might hit.

I watched the movie and read the book. Not only did Lee Strobel make that initial journey to interview experts and then convert to Christianity, he then went and interviewed them and other experts in more detail for the book.

After his conversion, he also went from being an arrogant, hard-drinking S.O.B. to an upstanding husband and father.

“The case for Christ.”

Wonderful movie we watched last week. My wife met Lee Strobel back in 1980.

A better movie, at least for me, is “Billy, The Early Years” about Billy Graham, the man who converted millions to Christ. Billy did not believe until he heard Mordecai Ham, an evangelist, when he was 17. Who will replace Billy Graham who turned 99 in November?

Forgot to mention, we had to get the DVD from Netflix.

Pretty sure John Wayne wasn’t an atheist, but he did convert to Catholicism in the last few days of his life. He was potestant previously, and was even known to hand write letters to god.
