The largest Christian cathedral in the Middle East is being erected 40 km from Cairo on the decision of Egyptian president al Sisi, as a “symbol of coexistence”. On three shifts, 3000 men work in the construction site 24 hours a day. A first part of the complex was inaugurated on Christmas eve, celebrated by Coptic Christians January 6-7. Now it’s a race against time to complete it by next Christmas. Everyone is at work, Christian and Muslim engineers, with the support of the military. SIR visited the site.

It’s still a building site but once finished it will be the largest Christian cathedral in the Middle East. On the decision of the “pharaoh”, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al Sisi, the Coptic Christian cathedral is being built in an area approximately 40 km from Cairo, the so-called ‘New Cairo’, Egypt’s new administrative capital. On January 7 2017, during the Coptic Orthodox Christmas-eve Mass, the Egyptian President announced that the new cathedral would be inaugurated in a year’s time, by Christmas 2018. The former Egyptian general defined it "a symbol of coexistence".

A race against time began after the announcement, with 3000 construction workers on three shifts, 24 hours running. Under the sunlight during the day and with the light of photo-beams at night time. Against all odds, after six months of planning, the church of the Cathedral, named Christ’s Nativity church, “the first in Egypt bearing this name”, opened its doors to welcome Coptic Patriarch Tawadros II and the top authorities in the Country, notably President al Sisi, as planned, on the eve of January 7 2018, when Coptic Christians celebrate Christmas. “We love you, and we wish you good holidays”, were the first words of Al Sisi addressed to the faithful gathered in the cathedral for the.......

I realize that Sisi is not perfect, but I can’t imagine how horrible things would be in the ME had Morsi been allowed to consolidate his power and turn Egypt into a MB stronghold.

The previous administration’s evil actions in the ME had terrible consequences, but Sisi saved the world from catastrophe.

Indeed. He’s clever to support this church, it’s a bulwark against the muslim extremists.

Amazing. Usually it has been extraordinarily hard even to get permission to repair an existing church in Egypt; and that includes just repainting it.

No question this a wonderful gesture on the part of Sisi, and would that the Mohammedans would evolve into a sect that truly valued religious tolerance. The problem is Middle East leaders come and go, but the goofy book they worship never changes - Ataturk moved Turkey into the 20th century (no small feat that), but within a couple of generations that country is well on its way to devolving into another Middle Eastern sh*thole.

The photo of the partially-completed cathedral shown in the original article promises an impressive looking edifice, but I have to confess when I look at it, I’m thinking all they have to do if make a few changes to the steeples, and add a couple of matching minarets on the other end, and they’ve got their own Egyptian version of Santa Sophia.

“... would that the Mohammedans would evolve into a sect that truly valued religious tolerance. The problem is Middle East leaders come and go, but the goofy book they worship never change

There are five books they worship not just one. And there is no way any mussulman can become moderate in the western sense without becoming an apostate, nor can the cult practices change as that path is specifically forbidden under pain of death by their ‘prophet’.

A moderate mussulman is just one either donating at the mosque to jihadis to kill you or waiting for the right moment to kill you himself.

Naturally Obama was aligned against Sisi. It reminds me of how Obama undermined Micheletti in Honduras back in 2009. Glad Sisi was able to hang in there. Btw, off topic but I just found this interview with Micheletti from 2015. He is clearly still very bitter over the Obama admin’s actions and rightfully so.
