It is the ancient custom of the Church that no liturgy or mass is offered during the weekdays of the Great Fast except on the Feast of the Annunciation (which this year actually falls on a Sunday). In order to provide the faithful with the opportunity to commune the Holy Mysteries without having to wait a full week Pope St. Gregory the Great of Rome composed a special service whereby the faithful could partake of a special reserve of the Body and Blood consecrated on the previous Sunday.
