Urban legend. Google "Synod of Elvira".

This requirement, like so much of Roman Catholicism, "evolved" over the centuries. It was finally ruled on at Trent in the 24th session.

It is yet another man-made rule of Roman Catholicism.

The NT clearly allows for clergy to be married.
