Syro-Malabar [Catholic] Church Says Yoga is Incompatible with Christianity
AsiaNews ^ | 4/7/18

The Church’s Doctrinal Commission released a report on ‘Yoga and Catholic beliefs’. The practice is mandatory in schools. Hindu nationalists "try to exploit yoga to achieve their political and sectarian goals." The Church warns against equating “physical experiences stemming from yoga with the workings of the Holy Spirit.”

Mananthavady (AsiaNews/Agencies) – The practice of yoga is incompatible with Christian doctrine, this according to a report issued by the Syro-Malabar Church, one of the three rites of the Catholic Bishops' Conference of India (CBCI).

Published in the latest bulletin of the eparchy of Mananthavady, the paper by the Syro-Malabar Doctrinal Commission is titled ‘Yoga and Catholic beliefs’ (Yogayum Katholika Vishvasavum).

It notes that yoga and Christianity cannot go together and that Hindu nationalist groups (Sangh Parivar) "try to exploit yoga to achieve their political and sectarian goals."

It calls for a “re-reading of yoga” since the “government has moved towards making yoga compulsory in schools and present it as an inseparable part of Indian culture.”

This is not the first time that Syro-Malabar Bishops have spoken out on this matter. Last year they stated that "yoga is not a means to reach contact with the divine, although it may contribute to physical and mental health."

Yoga is a set of physical, mental, and spiritual practices that originated in India and spread around the world. It combines physical and breathing exercises. In Hinduism, it is also a spiritual journey to experience contact with the divine.

In Indian schools, yoga is compulsory and every year, on International Day Yoga (21 June), schools focus on activities and events dedicated to yoga.

“It’s why we don’t do such from other religions..”

Religion(s) are merely theories and philosophies of the anatomy & physiology of the human soul and how it interacts with its environment. Not saying they are incorrect theories as they are very correct. Just that some are more complete than others, that is why I am a Christian.

The human soul is physical to me so I agree with Jesus’ teachings based upon what I actually physically observe and experience, not just faith but a solid knowing. That is why I accept the Bible as truth.

Really??? Rubbish. It is what you make it. Haha Yoga is the Yoga division focused on stretching. It is physically good for you and can be done without accepting or practicing Yoga as a religion.

I have no idea if he was or not.

I know he survived a shipwreck off Malta.

What has that to do with anything?

There can be but some forms the goal is to open the shakra center which I probably did messing with the occult and some forms of charismatics. Or at night trying to do soul travel (and seemed to succeed but now I wonder if it is all an illusion, was delivered from that about 2 weeks before I entered the Catholic Church, praise God for that!) Once entering the church was disappointed in lack of conformity in the liturgical rules, can't remember the name of the slender book for that) (disobedience) and other things.

Hard to close shakra center or Edgar Cayce's third eye or pineal? gland) again if at all and for unclean souls an entry point for deceptive spirits. Just my opinion. Christian traditional posture can be postrate facing ground or kneeling. Kneeling may come from the bible, Every knee shall bow and tongue confess that Jesus is Lord. Also standing. Not sure about biblical traditional postures, lots of paintings notwithstanding.

In the bible, when a posture is mentioned, most seem to fall forward (or just fall) when experiencing an overpowering spiritual experience.

Many charismatics seem to prefer turning palms upward. I don't know if it matters too much except at masses if your heart is right with God.

That’s what I admire most in you - you like cookies. If it’s chocolate chip cookies, my admiration for you increases 24.5%.

John 14:6 is a very truthful scripture, but most don’t understand what is is saying. It goes along with John 14: 10

Do you not believe that I am in the Father, and the Father is in Me? The words that I say to you I do not speak on My own initiative, but the Father abiding in Me does His works. 11 Believe Me that I am in the Father and the Father is in Me;

AND

20 In that day you will know that I am in My Father, and you in Me, and I in you.

If I exist in Jesus and Jesus exist in God and both exist in me, how can I get to one without being in the other? IMPOSSIBLE as We are ONE, just as Jesus stated when he came out of His experience in the wilderness.

Every Yoga position is done to either mimic a Hindu God, allow for a spirit to enter you, or to allow your spirit to enter a different or higher plane. It is tied to the Chakras, Kundalini and other pagan practices.

Never heard of Euro-Malabar, but yes, yoga is NOT compatible with Christianity.
Here’s a good site:

What you say is absolutely true, but I get the feeling theirs is a response to a percieved attack on their already-embattled culture.

Plus, they’re 3rd worlders, so who knows.

There were three shipwrecks accounted for within his writings (2 Corinthians 11:25). However, there was a fourth one mentioned towards the very end of Paul’s life in Acts 27.

I have never experienced yoga. I can see how it might have physical and psychological benefits. But why is this coming up now, after eons of coexistence between Hindus and Indian Catholics? It seems that some Hindus are forcing yoga as Hindu nationalism and spirituality on non-Hindus. If that is the case, I have to defer to the judgment of Indian Catholics for a living through this

Because every position in yoga is a form of praise to one of the many Hindu “gods”.
