I agree... Janis Joplin (as tragic as her life turned out) had a valid point there. Complete “freedom” (meaning.. loss of faith) leaves a person with everything to lose. Can’t throw everything away and still have much left.
It continues to amaze, baffle me... how so many folks who were raised inside, with a Biblical (Catholic, Protestant, Jewish, ...) faith “confession”... community...congregation... even many of those with the benefits of significant religious educations.... have just thrown everything away... and often even turn into hate-filled protagonists of faith in the Divine.
Talk about “throwing the baby away with the bathwater!”... ha! They apparently could find nothing or almost nothing of any spiritual value, leaving all questions of doctrinal distinctives aside? I, for one, can find much of great value... in a considerable number of faith communities...yes, I don’t agree with everything when I visit one or the other, but for some folks to just throw Everything (or at least the “core” teachings and moral values) aside? They make such a tragic decision....it is so very, very sad.
