In effect, the possibility of the indult was perhaps a weakness. There is one part of the book in which I speak of the role of ecclesiastical authority, where I seek to demonstrate – in hindsight – that the concession of the indult has in some way allowed us to arrive at the situation now evident to everyone. If there had simply been a reception of the position of the majority of bishops that was against the possibility of receiving Communion in the hand, perhaps things would have been different.

To paraphrase- Make the abuse legal where it couldn’t be eliminated. Francis has applied that philosophy across the board

Also in catechesis, above all that of children, there is a need to teach the proper way to receive the Eucharist, that is, on the tongue.

EXCEPT, of course, Scripture says "TAKE this and eat" Take, not receive.

The true story of the reversal of the prohibition of altar girls, all under the same Pope, John Paul II.

INAESTIMABILE DONUM
Instruction Concerning Worship Of The Eucharistic Mystery
(April 17, 1980)

18. There are, of course, various roles that women can perform in the liturgical assembly: these include reading the Word of God and proclaiming the intentions of the Prayer of the Faithful. Women are not, however, permitted to act as altar servers.

Yet, in 1992:

Subsequently, at an Audience granted on 11 July 1992 to the Most Reverend Vincenzo Fagiolo, Archbishop Emeritus of Chieti-Vasto and President of the Pontifical Council for the Interpretation of Legislative Texts, Pope John Paul II confirmed the decision and ordered its promulgation. This will be done in the near future.

3) If in some diocese, on the basis of Canon 230 #2, the Bishop permits that, for particular reasons, women may also serve at the altar, this decision must be clearly explained to the faithful, in the light of the above-mentioned norm. It shall also be made clear that the norm is already being widely applied, by the fact that women frequently serve as lectors in the Liturgy and can also be called upon to distribute Holy Communion as Extraordinary Ministers of the Eucharist and to carry out other functions, according to the provisions of the same Canon 230 #3.

I was at mass some time ago and a slightly retarded looking homeless guy, who had been wandering around inside the church, got in line at Communion and receive the host in his hand. He looked it over, front and back, and then put it in his pants pocket. Someone told an usher and they got it back from the guy. He was cooperative.
