Proverb A Day, Proverb 1 [Prayer and Meditation]
NKJV Bible ^ | 900 B.C. | Solomon

Posted on 06/01/2018 6:36:37 AM PDT by OneVike

We’ve all experienced a myriad of relationships—in our families, in our friendships, romantically, and at work. Over time, they change and evolve, and sometimes we know what to do with them. But other times, we’re not so sure.

When your fiancé calls off the wedding, when a parent leaves your family for someone else, when your boss bullies you, when your friend takes advantage of you, what do you do? Is there a relationship manual somewhere? What does God have to say? How does He want us to respond in these situations?

Proverbs is a great place to start. This book is written by Solomon, the wisest man to ever live, and it’s chock-full of relationship advice and timeless truths from God Himself. It’s this fear of the Lord that is the beginning of knowledge, and as we learn and listen to these proverbs, we can gain a better grasp of what is truly right and fair—and even what is expected of God’s people. Will you embrace His wisdom and instruction today?

Reflect:

1.) Whose advice do you always accept? God, your spouse, a parent, your best friend, or Google?

2.)May this be our prayer today: “Lord, I know in my heart that your wisdom is the advice I should always take, but there are times when I go to my other relationships first. Today, I recommit my devotion to you—may I always take your wisdom and instruction to heart first and foremost.”

( Devotional from Eagle Brook Church )

Proverb 1 (NKJV)

The Beginning of Knowledge

01 The proverbs of Solomon the son of David, king of Israel:

02 To know wisdom and instruction,
00To perceive the words of understanding,
03 To receive the instruction of wisdom,
00 Justice, judgment, and equity;
04 To give prudence to the simple,
00 To the young man knowledge and discretion--
05 A wise man will hear and increase learning,
00 And a man of understanding will attain wise counsel,
06 To understand a proverb and an enigma,
00 The words of the wise and their riddles.

07 The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge,
00 But fools despise wisdom and instruction.

Shun Evil Counsel

08 My son, hear the instruction of your father,
00 And do not forsake the law of your mother;
09 For they will be a graceful ornament on your head,
00 And chains about your neck.

10 My son, if sinners entice you,
00 Do not consent.
11 If they say, "Come with us,
00 Let us lie in wait to shed blood;
00 Let us lurk secretly for the innocent without cause;
12 Let us swallow them alive like Sheol,
00 And whole, like those who go down to the Pit;
13 We shall find all kinds of precious possessions,
00 We shall fill our houses with spoil;
14 Cast in your lot among us,
00 Let us all have one purse"--
15 My son, do not walk in the way with them,
00 Keep your foot from their path;
16 For their feet run to evil,
00 And they make haste to shed blood.
17 Surely, in vain the net is spread
00 In the sight of any bird;
18 But they lie in wait for their own blood,
00 They lurk secretly for their own lives.
19 So are the ways of everyone who is greedy for gain;
00 It takes away the life of its owners.

The Call of Wisdom

20 Wisdom calls aloud outside;
00 She raises her voice in the open squares.
21 She cries out in the chief concourses,
00 At the openings of the gates in the city
00 She speaks her words:
22 "How long, you simple ones, will you love simplicity?
00 For scorners delight in their scorning,
00 And fools hate knowledge.
23 Turn at my rebuke;
00 Surely I will pour out my spirit on you;
00 I will make my words known to you.
24 Because I have called and you refused,
00 I have stretched out my hand and no one regarded,
25 Because you disdained all my counsel,
00 And would have none of my rebuke,
26 I also will laugh at your calamity;
00 I will mock when your terror comes,
27 When your terror comes like a storm,
00 And your destruction comes like a whirlwind,
00 When distress and anguish come upon you.

28 "Then they will call on me, but I will not answer;
00 They will seek me diligently, but they will not find me.
29 Because they hated knowledge
00 And did not choose the fear of the LORD,
30 They would have none of my counsel
00 And despised my every rebuke.
31 Therefore they shall eat the fruit of their own way,
00 And be filled to the full with their own fancies.
32 For the turning away of the simple will slay them,
00 And the complacency of fools will destroy them;
33 But whoever listens to me will dwell safely,
00 And will be secure, without fear of evil."

One of the things which makes Proverbs difficult for me to read is because it convicts me so much. Which, of course, is why I should be reading it every day.

That statement could be used for the whole Bible. LOL

If the guilt gets you from reading the Proverbs, then go to the book of Psalms next. Especially any of the Psalms from 42-72. They pretty much deal with man's longing for deliverance.

Just as the book of Exodus tells us the story of Israel in captivity in Egypt, these Psalms describe the sorrow we feel due to our dalliances in sin as we ignored Him until we needed Him in our lives.

They poignantly describe our yearning for freedom as the Israelites did while in slavery in Egypt. Thus the reason God chose Moses, when at the burning bush He said:
"I have surely seen the oppression of My people who are in Egypt, and have heard their cry because of their taskmasters, for I know their sorrows." Exodus 3:7
Our longing for deliverance from sin is beautifully expressed in the opening words of Psalm 42,
"As the deer pants for the water brooks, So pants my soul for You, O God. My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. When shall I come and appear before God? My tears have been my food day and night, While they continually say to me, "Where is your God?" psalm 42:1-2
The last of this series of Psalms (42-72), Psalm 72 shows God as the almighty King who has set men free from the bondage which has enslaved us
"Yes, all kings shall fall down before Him; All nations shall serve Him. For He will deliver the needy when he cries, The poor also, and him who has no helper. He will spare the poor and needy, And will save the souls of the needy. He will redeem their life from oppression and violence; and precious shall be their blood in His sight." Psalm 72:12-14

"If the guilt gets you from reading the Proverbs,"

Oh, it doesn't. It just makes it difficult but I know the best medicine often tastes the worse. If I ever STOP getting convicted then I'll worry because that would mean the Holy Spirit isn't working in me.

Ecclesiastes 1:1 The words of the Preacher,
the son of David, king in Jerusalem.

2 “Vanity of vanities,” says the Preacher;
“Vanity of vanities, all is vanity.”

3 What profit has a man from all his labor
In which he toils under the sun?
4 One generation passes away, and another generation comes;
But the earth abides forever.

5 The sun also rises, and the sun goes down,
And hastens to the place where it arose.
6 The wind goes toward the south,
And turns around to the north;
The wind whirls about continually,
And comes again on its circuit.

7 All the rivers run into the sea,
Yet the sea is not full;
To the place from which the rivers come,
There they return again.
8 All things are full of labor;
Man cannot express it.
The eye is not satisfied with seeing,
Nor the ear filled with hearing.

9 That which has been is what will be,
That which is done is what will be done,
And there is nothing new under the sun.
10 Is there anything of which it may be said,
“See, this is new”?
It has already been in ancient times before us.
11 There is no remembrance of former things,
Nor will there be any remembrance of things that are to come
By those who will come after.

12 I, the Preacher, was king over Israel in Jerusalem. 13 And I set my heart to seek and search out by wisdom concerning all that is done under heaven; this burdensome task God has given to the sons of man, by which they may be exercised. 14 I have seen all the works that are done under the sun; and indeed, all is vanity and grasping for the wind.

15 What is crooked cannot be made straight,
And what is lacking cannot be numbered.

16 I communed with my heart, saying, “Look, I have attained greatness, and have gained more wisdom than all who were before me in Jerusalem. My heart has understood great wisdom and knowledge.” 17 And I set my heart to know wisdom and to know madness and folly. I perceived that this also is grasping for the wind.

18 For in much wisdom is much grief,
And he who increases knowledge increases sorrow.

Shabbat Shalom!
