Old Mass Shouldn't Be Called “Extraordinary” But the “More Ancient And Constant Form”

Bishop Athanasius Schneider said in a Corpus Christi homily in Winnipeg, Canada, that the Old Latin Mass should not be called “extraordinary” but the “more ancient and constant form” of Mass.

The reason: The traditional form of Mass has been celebrated in its details during more than a thousand years.

According to NewLiturgicalMovement.org, Schneider pointed out that almost all saints of the second millennium were “drawing their spiritual strength from this immemorial liturgy”.

Why not just call it “The Latin Mass” to simplify things??

One can argue about desirability of any Mass, but the Pope alone has plenary power to establish the form of the Mass which has historically ćhanged.

I wouldn’t call Paul VI’s “mess” a historical change. It was a complete rupture.

Many agree that Pope Paul's Mass was a rupture. But Popes are not using the “development of doctrine” paradigm with the Mass. They are exercising plenary power.

I think you are misusing the word plenary, which is usually referred to in Pope’s rulings on indulgences, penances, fasting, etc.; not the abandonment of “the organic, living process of growth and development over centuries, and replaced it – as in a manufacturing process – with a fabrication, a banal on -the-spot product (Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger)”.

You are quoting my favorite. But, if plenary is wrong word, the absolute might be better. And yes, prudence in changing the Mass is ideal, but not mandated in any way as far as I understand it

It also ushered in a bunch of bad music.

TLM, for Traditional Latin Mass, is a shortcut.
