There were some exemplary members of the family, particularly among the ones murdered 100 years ago. What befell them was the outpouring of anger pent-up over generations. The tsarist period of Russian history was largely responsible for breeding collective psychosis among the vast majority of their subjects (serfs) who made up the population - producing the bloody madness of the 20th Century.

At least the Russian Orthodox church doesn’t condone fag marriage.

The spread of Soviet, godless, secular, and socialist ideals that infiltrated the West did quite a lot of damage didn’t it? Russians understand it from the source.

Nicholas’ “sin” was losing to Japan in 1905, that set the wheels into motion.

I can't help wondering if the veneration of the Romanov family, and the resurgence of the Russian Orthodox Church is setting the stage for the coronation of Tsar Vladimir (Putin).

Not literally. I can't see anybody putting a crown on Putin's head. But he's definitely using Russian nationalism and the Orthodox revival to increase and secure his power.

And Jacob Schiff and his Friends of Russian Freedom in the United States along with some in Great Britain helped finance Japan winning on that front. It's a fact of history that has been repressed to a large extent but it was reported by the NYT in 1917. There is more out there on the web, but one has to be careful with objectivity which can be difficult.

The rest of it is complicated with Alexis, the only direct male heir to the throne and inheriting from Queen Victoria the genetic disease of hemophilia. And Alexxandra turning to Rasputin who had some occultic powers or suggestive or whatever it was. That became a source of hatred by many. Alexandra's sister was brutally shot in a pit. She had become a nun and was a martyr and saint, too.

Nicolas was oblivious to the suffering of his people.

Eh, speaking as an American, I’m not too certain on Western freedom and democracy, especially the latter bit. I see it as no different than Bolshevikism, especially when democracy (not to mention so-called freedom under “Liberte, Egalite, Fraternite” and “total liberty”, which was closer to “total anarchy”) was practiced by the French in the late 18th century. We’re closer to a Republic anyway (there’s a reason why the founding fathers did NOT mention democracy, or even “demo” in their founding documents.).

Still, nice to hear that some Russians aren’t supporting the re-Stalinization of Russia that Putin’s doing (and I know a few Russians, one anyways, she’s a dentist, and based on our interactions has no love for the Communists), and if anything want our method of governance.

Solzhenitsyn tried to warn the West of this, but they didn't listen.

I think the folks who live in the big cities like Moscow and St. Petersburg, are more like us, but in the countryside, it’s a different story.

Although, I am intrigued by the long-term impact of hosting the World Cup, as maybe for the first time in their history, Russia truly opened themselves up to the world, and not just the two big cities of Moscow and St. Petersburg. And by all accounts, they did a great job.

Likewise. It's exciting. Especially in light of their resurgence in relevance to US politics.

Eh, at least with the tsars, it is most likely due to Christian factions infighting with each other (which, while unfortunate, is pretty much par the course with differing religions. I refuse to consider atheism a religion, even state atheism. I think of three key things regarding a religion: A deity, supernatural elements, and an afterlife. Atheism lacks at least two of the three, if not all three).
