One of the best things that the bishops of the American Catholic Church did during the great wave of sex abuse revelations 16 years ago — and yes, there’s a low bar for “best” — was to establish a National Review Board, staffed by prominent layman, with the authority to commission an independent report on what exactly had happened in the church.

The result was a careful analysis by the John Jay College of Criminal Justice that detailed the patterns of priestly sex abuse in American Catholicism between 1950 and 2002: How many, how often, what kind of abuse, what strategy of predation, how many victims, which sex, what age, how the priest’s superiors responded (or didn’t), how often the courts were involved, what scale of settlements were paid, and so on through a wealth of grim statistical detail.

The most devastating thing in retrospect———the abused kids could not get anyone to listen. Nobody believed them. This is commonplace among calculating pedophiles. They seek out vulnerable kids knowing they can do whatever they want without discovery.

<><>One TV segment had a woman beating herself up——she tells how as a divorcee, she married a “wonderful” man who loved her young fatherless kids.

Her young daughter came to her and told her the man came into her room at night and molested her......but the happily married woman would not believe her “wonderful” new husband was capable of that. Then one day she caught him in the act. She never forgave herself for ignoring her daughter’s cries for help.

<><> Actress Debbie Reynolds told how Harry Karl pursued her and was especially kind to her fatherless children, abandoned by Eddie Fisher.

But Carrie Fisher later wrote that Harry would come into their play area wearing just a shirt with his privates hanging out.....getting a thrill from his “exhibitionism.”
Carrie never said whether they were molested....but kids tend to block out such atrocities.

Debbie never knew about the kids......but Harry was a bigtime thief.....and stole every penny Debbie made and put her in penury-—she had to sleep in her car.

I don’t mean to diminish any cases of real abuse, but when I read many of these reports involving diabolical mutants like McCarrick it’s hard to avoid concluding that most of these “abuse” cases were actually consensual interactions between adults.

consensual interactions between adults ?

You mean SEX by dirt-bags who had taken vows of celibacy?

Avoid the truth at all costs. The journalists have a party line and are spewing it broadly and consistently. McCarrick is the fall guy. It could be any of thousands of priests/bishops. The issue is not sex abuse. It IS homosexuality. The Catholic hierarchy and the media are simply continuing their usual Commandment: cover for the gays.

If some of the victims were legally adults - albeit young - that would make it the same as sexual harassment of an employee. Still immoral and illegal, and with a prison sentence attached.

If McCarrick is the fall guy, I’d hate to imagine who is being covered. It recalls the joke about the Italian cop who pulls over a limo and finds the Pope driving.

Yes. Variations from “lovers” to violence happen in a homo-dominant environment like large parts of the Church. Think of the infamous Camarillo Four. I had a friend go there in late ‘70’s - gay bath house. The young men either fit with the culture or left the priesthood and often the Church.

And might we all not be surprised if the pope is driving? Maybe with kiddies in the back seat.

"... it’s hard to avoid concluding that most of these “abuse” cases were actually consensual interactions between adults."

Legally, I think, some of it might be classified as "consensual interactions between adults."

OTOH, some of it might be, legally, sexual assault or sexual battery: unwanted repeated sexual harassing, importuning, or touching.

And in a third category, some of it might not have been illegal as to the criminal code, but was still seriously exploitative or manipulative (in both senses) rather than the kind of egalitarian relation envisioned by "consensual interaction."

Because of the serious power imbalance --- the offender being a much more socially well-placed and prominent elder and mentor, and most importantly, being an ecclesiastical superior of the much younger man --- the contact was that of a bullying lecher against a vulnerable victimized young adult.

It's much worse, almost incomparably worse than Weinstein stuff, the Hollywood "casting couch" and so forth. It's a supposed spiritual father, a hierarchical chicken hawk hitting on seminarians and young priest proteges.

Straight-out diabolical sacrilegious violation. There's little that's comparably depraved, this side of hell.

After getting all of Pope Benedict’s luggage loaded into the limo, (and he doesn’t travel light), the driver notices the Pope still standing on the curb. “Excuse me, Your Holiness,” says the driver,” Would you please take your seat so we can leave?” “Well, to tell you the truth,” says the Pope, “they never let me drive at the Vatican when I was a cardinal, and now that I’m Pope, I’d really like to drive today.” “I’m sorry, Your Holiness, but I cannot let you do that. I’d lose my job! And what if something should happen?” protests the driver, wishing he’d never gone to work that morning. “Who’s going to tell? Besides, there might be something extra in it for you,” says the Pope with a smile. Reluctantly, the driver gets in the back as the Pope climbs in behind the wheel. The driver quickly regrets his decision when, after exiting the airport, the Pontiff floors it, accelerating the limo to 105 mph. (Remember, he’s German.) “Please slow down, Your Holiness!” pleads the worried driver, but the Pope keeps the pedal to the metal until they hear sirens. “Oh, Dear God, I’m gonna lose my license — and my job!” moans the driver. The Pope pulls over and rolls down the window as the cop approaches, but the cop takes one look at him, goes back to his motorcycle, and gets on the radio. “I need to talk to the Chief,” he says to the dispatcher. The Chief gets on the radio and the cop tells him that he’s stopped a limo going a hundred and five. “So bust him,” says the Chief. “I don’t think we want to do that, he’s really big,” said the cop. The Chief exclaimed,” All the more reason!” “No, I mean really important,” said the cop with a bit of persistence. The Chief then asked, “Who ya got there, the Mayor?” Cop: “Bigger.” Chief: “ The Governor?” Cop: “Bigger.” Chief: “The President?” Cop: “Bigger.” “Well,” said the Chief, “Who is it?” Cop: “I think it’s God!” The Chief is stumped, “ You been drinking, John? “ Cop: “ No Sir.” Chief : “ Then what makes you think it’s God?” Cop: “He’s got the Pope as a chauffeur.”

“McCarrick moved swiftly against those credibly accused of molesting children, both in Newark, where he served as archbishop for 14 years, and in Washington, where he arrived in 2001.‘

Catholic journalists are often also part of the enabling culture. Winters (author of below) is a product of CUA and had to have known the truth.

The most devastating thing is that the Lavender Mafia the Church insisted didn’t exist eventually reached the top position in the US Church - the Cardinal of Washington DC. Everything else flowed from there...
