Porn is slowly killing Evangelicalism
Patheos ^ | June 12, 2018 | Grayson Gilbert

Posted on 08/24/2018 10:41:00 AM PDT by CondoleezzaProtege

Pornography is single-handedly one of the worst epidemics facing the Evangelical church today. There are a myriad of other factors which appear to be eroding the Western church from the inside-out, yet Evangelicals scarcely address the root of the problem of pornography within the church. On the whole, human sexuality is undergoing an existential crisis. Yet the church is placed squarely in the midst of this crisis, often not even addressing its own underlying issues until far too late. Leader after leader (after leader!) disqualifies himself through sexual misconduct, all the while the name of Christ is slandered. Lest we focus on only Evangelical leaders though, sexual misconduct, including rampant use of porn, is very much present within the laity of the church.

We live in a culture that consumes pornography at the same rate as hamburgers – and we don’t see that as an absolutely terrifying trend...People have removed any purpose to sexuality other than pleasure. If we sense pornography does not facilitate this with abundant ease, we are naïve at best. If we sense the church has not bought into this lie, well, the statistics show otherwise.

We don’t see these things because we don’t properly understand humanity in terms of relation to God, but instead, we see it in terms of sexuality. One might be tempted to look at these things from a purely clinical perspective, but Scriptural precedent clearly establishes a direct correlation between all forms of sexual perversion and a hatred of God and our fellow man.

Yet Evangelical Christians are still participating in these deeds of darkness without much forethought to the long-term consequences. Here we stand, at the precipice of cultural, sexual anarchy, enjoying the same titillating nonsense this world so eagerly digests.

Porn mocks God, and is as deadly as a ravenous tiger.
Don’t let it get close.

Well said.

Respect for marriage and for sexual continence go up or down in tandem. People who highly respect marriage, highly respect -- for example --- virginity and chastity. People who don't see the point of marriage, also don't see the point of any form of sexual self-restraint.

I believe you are correct. ONLY GOD could have elected Trump. Even the night of the election, everyone thought he was toast, yet he won! How?? I believe it was a GOD thing and I believe GOD was giving America one last chance to repent. But, after the election, America has gone back to the way it was, toast. So, I fear Trump might win next time. That would be GOD’s punishment for this nation’s wickedness and sins, simple as that. I can only hope that HE comes in the Harpazo before that happens and America crashes and burns.

Not the kind of place I would look for any sort of religious guidance but everyone has their own way I suppose.

It's not about theology per se. It's an ecumenical discussion place about the effects of religious belief and practice in society, and whether or how such beliefs, behaviors and attitudes are changing over time, etc. Look to the Bible and your own denomination for spiritual authority.

Sarah Palin has written for Patheos. I guess she’s evil now.
Her daughter used to on a regular basis but I guess she gave up that gig.

Who says women don’t like porn? I actually read a study and I believe it to be true that the largest growing base of porn viewers is Christian women. Go figure.

Yes. I understand. There is much in life that is a disconnect between the two worlds if you think about it. Many seemingly 'small' and 'large' activities, choices, and ways of being. Porn is an easy one to point out. Then there are the smaller things people do every day and rationalize and never question. Those too are to me some of the worst as people seem to never examine their relationships to those ways of being and their religious life. As can I struggle.

I feel very blessed to have a religious life and to be concerned about those dilemmas and challenges in spiritual growth.

Well said, well said.

I think the danger is the unrealistic expectations, not any stimulation or gratification.

It has been my experience that men who regularly get “serviced” by the lady they love have little interest in porn.

Perhaps we should return to the practice of boys and girls getting married at a young age. Then guys could have sex with their wives rather than needing porn.

I wonder how much porn Mollie Tibbits murderer was indulging in.

There was rape and murder before porn.

I suspect you’ve never read Barbara Cartland, lol. All her heroines are virgins until the marriage with the Lord of the Manor.

Women buy fantasies about getting commitment from the Lord of the Manor, or the Barbarian Chief, or the Pirate Captain.

Men buy fantasies about finding an attractive woman who will have sex with them.

It's two sides of the same coin. Men want sex, and to get it will strive to become the kind of high-status man who women are attracted to.

And other church men also.

First it kills the marriage.

Then that kills the families.

Except that fear of getting pregnant outside of marriage, used to make a lot of young women remain virgins. Once the pill came along, boom! That healthy fear evaporated.

Pornography is single-handedly one of the worst epidemics facing the Evangelical church today.

For which the writer provides no comparative stats, which is important since we see this as just another of your damage control attempts to take the focus off the Catholic church scandals. Recently you even resorted to the Luther-Hitler connection, only to have Rome's treatment of Jews exposed .

No doubt pornography is a problem in evangelicalism to some degree, esp. as the term becomes diluted, which makes it more notable since that has been the most conservative large religious segment of America.

But if you want to be objective in your latest hit piece, let us at least consider what each side has testified to:
