I am in no position to say this --- sitting in a cheap seat in the peanut gallery --- but I think it would be better for him to be canonically deposed than to resign, if that is possible. If he is canonically deposed --- ideally on the grounds that the 2013 Conclave was invalid and Bergoglio was never the valid pope --- all his official acts and appointments would be invalidated.

Nobody's sayin that at this point, except old retired Abp. Rene Gracida of Corpus Christi.

But still: a consummation devoutly to be desired.

Here is what I do not understand. Why did Ratzinger leave? Was he forced out? If so, why? What is the general take of the traditional Catholics about him?
Would the church want him back? WOuld it even be possible?
