"paltering.", which means deceiving by saying something that's technically true.
Intended used-car buyer: "I assume it's been checked by a mechanic?" Paltering salesman: "Sure, Mister, every car here been checked out. And I took this one for a spin just this morning, and it was flawless."
When the truth is,
- Yes, all the cars have been checked out.
- THIS ONE, however, failed the test because the engine always conks out after 20 minutes.
- I took it for a spin for ten minutes, and it was flawless.
