From where comes this papolatry, this notion suddenly beloved by liberals that the Holy Spirit chooses the Pope? Are even two-thirds the Cardinals in a state of grace, let alone consumed by the Holy Spirit? Did the Holy Spirit choose Alexander VI? Honorius? Formosus? Boniface VI?
The Holy Spirit prevents the Bishop of Rome from declaring as infallible that which is heresy. Not the Bishop of Kansas, like some anti-Vatican II quacks might hold. (Nor have I ever seen where the coadjutor of Rome is blessed with this gift.)
Indeed, if the pope is individually selected by the Holy Spirit, there’s no need for a secret Conclave of Cardinals. Simply draw straws or set up a computer algorithm or pick names out of a hat. The Spirit can work thru those methods just as well. As with certain lightening bolts, many Catholics are on the goofy side of the fine line of superstition.
