Mons. Reig Pla is probably the best bishop in Spain (although there are a couple of other very good ones, appointed under BXVI). He is orthodox, an extremely good writer and speaker, and a very kind and dedicated shepherd. I met him once at a conference in Alcala de Henares.
This is a university city and hes been under attack there for years. Also, the lay faithful were very badly formed by their prior bishop and many of them are pro-gay, pro-transgender, anti-family, pro-wacky feminist modern Catholics, whose main goal in life is to conform to all the teachings of the anti-Christian Socialist Party or its more radical offshoots. So he has had to work very hard and fight very hard to do his job. But he just sticks with it and is a very heroic shepherd, in my mind. I wish we had one of his like in the US!
Any attempts to close the barn door now will result in orthodox clergy (the few remaining) at odds with completely unchurched congregations (what remains of them).
