Jesus Before Pilate

28 Then the Jewish leaders took Jesus from Caiaphas to the palace of the Roman governor. By now it was early morning, and to avoid ceremonial uncleanness they did not enter the palace, because they wanted to be able to eat the Passover. 29 So Pilate came out to them and asked, “What charges are you bringing against this man?”

30 “If he were not a criminal,” they replied, “we would not have handed him over to you.”

31 Pilate said, “Take him yourselves and judge him by your own law.”

“But we have no right to execute anyone,” they objected. 32 This took place to fulfill what Jesus had said about the kind of death he was going to die.

33 Pilate then went back inside the palace, summoned Jesus and asked him, “Are you the king of the Jews?”

34 “Is that your own idea,” Jesus asked, “or did others talk to you about me?”

35 “Am I a Jew?” Pilate replied. “Your own people and chief priests handed you over to me. What is it you have done?”

36 Jesus said, “My kingdom is not of this world. If it were, my servants would fight to prevent my arrest by the Jewish leaders. But now my kingdom is from another place.”

37 “You are a king, then!” said Pilate.

Jesus answered, “You say that I am a king. In fact, the reason I was born and came into the world is to testify to the truth. Everyone on the side of truth listens to me.”

38 “What is truth?” retorted Pilate. With this he went out again to the Jews gathered there and said, “I find no basis for a charge against him. 39 But it is your custom for me to release to you one prisoner at the time of the Passover. Do you want me to release ‘the king of the Jews’?”

40 They shouted back, “No, not him! Give us Barabbas!” Now Barabbas had taken part in an uprising.

There is a strange dynamic working here between Pilate and the Jewish Leaders. Rome was an occupying force, and they could do whatever they wanted. However, they're dealing with a People who were chafing under the oppression, and very rebellious. So, in a way, they feared the very mob that they oppressed. The Jewish Leaders feared Rome, but were able to manipulate Pilate to do their bidding, even to the point of releasing an admitted criminal and prosecuting an innocent Man.

Our Lord and Heavenly Father,
You are The LORD Who Avenges Your People.
We Know the World hates Your People because they hate You.
Your Word tells us This Would Happen.
We also know that our Battle is not with other people,
but with spiritual forces that oppose You.
Yet We groan under the oppression of the Enemy
Who, Day by Day, For Centuries, Torments Your People
You Alone Are The One With Authority
to Avenge the Great Wrongs Against Your People.
You Alone are the Eternal Arbiter of Justice.
We pray For True, Godly Justice For Those Who love You and Who Are Called By Your Name!

We Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem,
According to Your Will and Promise.
We Pray For the People and Leaders of Israel,
that They Will Look to You for the Protection
and Prosperity of their Nation.
We Also Pray For Revival in our own Beloved USA.



We Pray For The Leaders of Our Nation,

Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem






I try not to inject too much "politics" into this Daily Devotional. You all know where I stand (Pro-God, Pro-Life, Pro-Country, Pro-Constitution), and there are thousands of other threads on this site alone where politics can get a rollicking melee happening. So, I usually draw my stories from my childhood, from experiences in the working world, ministry, motorcycle riding across our beautiful country, and life on the road as a musician. Since we are in our ninth year together, I've repeated myself a few times, but...it is what it is!

Today, however, I am struck by the huge coincidence(?) of current events lining up with our Scripture Portion as we examine the Gospel of John in little segments. We are, of course, speaking of the Arrest and Trial of Jesus, His appearance before the Sanhedrin and then Procurator Pontius Pilate, and the actions of duplicitous officials, and a howling mob which was allegedly paid to make trouble. With a toxic mix of False Accusations, deliberate misinterpretations of words, sanctimonious hypocrisy, double-standards, and outright LIES, I was struck by the contrasts and similarities with the confirmation process of our Supreme Court Justices.

I am not merely speaking of the most recent events surrounding Justice Kavanaugh, although, his case was the most egregious of all of them. This started a long time ago in 1987 when President Ronald Reagan nominated Judge Robert Bork to the Supreme Court. Due to what the Left perceived as an "imbalance", they mercilessly smeared the man, forcing his withdrawal from nomination. Flushed with this "victory", the left added a new word to our national vocabulary:

This vicious tactic was attempted again when Justice Clarence Thomas was nominated, and included ridiculous accusations of a sexual nature. So now "borking" had a sexual nature. Thank goodness the attempt at borking Justice Thomas was unsuccessful!

The "borking" of Justice Kavanaugh went even further. For some crazy reason, costumed, screaming mobs were allowed into the proceedings. There is now even video evidence of at least some of these being paid by some shadowy organization. Not only that, but some of our own lawmakers and government seemed to be involved in subsequent accusations that just kept getting more and more outlandish as the days went by.

In spite of this, neither Kavanaugh, nor the President who nominated him backed down. It frustrated us as we saw delay after delay and wondered why it seemed that people we admired were "giving in" to the mob.

At no point did President Trump ask "What is Truth?", nor did he "wash his hands of the whole affair." Those who wavered ended up making a spectacle of themselves, and others who stood tall earned our respect (some for the first time!).

Then, President Trump APOLOGIZED on behalf of the entire country for what Kavanaugh and his family were put through in this process. You might say, "Trump didn't need to apologize. He wasn't the one who did that awful thing to this man. He stood by him!"

But, as president of the United States, representing ALL the People (including the jerks), President Trump took it upon himself and did the right thing.

Pilate will always be remembered for SHIRKING responsibility, while President Trump could very well be remembered forever as the man who stood by his friend, and took responsibility for a whole nation in doing so.

Just my opinion. Glad I got that off my chest!

Great timeless lesson.

And one of the oldest creeds of the church is that Jesus “was crucified under Pontius Pilate.”
