The court ruled there was no discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation or political opinion
A Christian bakery has won its appeal against a ruling that it unfairly discriminated against a gay man by refusing to make a cake bearing a pro-gay marriage slogan.
In a unanimous decision, the UK Supreme Court ruled in favour of the bakery in a landmark ruling on Wednesday.
Belfast High Court ruled in 2015 that husband and wife Daniel and Amy McArthur, who run the bakery, had discriminated against a customer when they refused to bake him a cake with the slogan “Support Gay Marriage” on it. They were ordered to pay £500 in damages.
The Belfast Court of Appeals then rejected their appeal in October 2016.
The couple then took their appeal to the UK Supreme Court, which sat in Belfast for the first time in May this year.
Delivering the verdict on Wednesday, Baroness Hale said the bakers did not refuse to fulfil the man’s order due to his sexuality. “The bakers’ objection was to the message, not the man,” she said.
She also added that “no one should be forced to hold or express an opinion which they do not believe”.
“This court holds there was no discrimination on political opinion or religious belief,” she concluded.

I’m glad the court ruled as it did. What if a gay couple wants the baker to make a cake with the lettering “Congratulations Ian and Nigel”?

Sanity in the UK government? If even a glimmer still exists that’s encouraging.
Funny how they never try to make a Muslim baker make a cake for a gay wedding.
Maybe it would depend on whether the baker was told that Ian and Nigel were celebrating a “marriage.” If that isn’t specified, it’s possible that Ian and Nigel have successfully launched a business venture.
This was a 4 year fight and financially draining, but the lovely looking husband and wife give credit to God and the judges for the win!

Bake a cake that says “Support Gay Marriage - Everyone Deserves To Be Happy”. Explain to the couple there’s no charge for the additional lettering.
I’m getting to the point where I believe all these “left vs right” court cases are paid agitators on both sides.

I’m curious what is your point?
Are you suggesting there were or are people who AREN’T sinners?
Christ certainly never approved, promoted nor even tolerated the sin of the sinners He encountered.
And when He famously forgave the prostitute/adulteress, His command to her afterwards was to sin no more.
In liberal U.S. courts, the bakers would have lost.
The judge would have stated that the message was “by the gays” and that the bakers were not creating the message, just planting someone else’s message on the cake.
On the other hand, why couldn’t the gay couple have just taken the cake and written put the message themselves on the cake? It seems that the gays were just out looking to stir trouble.
I’m suggesting that the Bible preaches we are not to eat a meal with people who call themselves Christians but are conducting a sinful life...
While on the other hand, Jesus Himself ate meals with sinners.
He did not “remove Himself from the world”... in false asceticism.
Neither are we to be prissy stick-in-the-muds, who do not know how to mingle with people and indeed, love all people from all walks of life, demonstrating His love.
What I’m suggesting is we are to be “all things to all people” and love them “with a flavor of wit”...
And I do seriously wonder about all of these jerky lawsuits that make Christians look like idiot prissies who hate people who do not know Christ.
They have deluded themselves into believing Muslims are their allies because intersectionality. Together with their Islamic Comrades they will erase Christianity and Western civilization from the earth, ushering in a brave new world of peace, love, and reduced CO2 emmissions.
