John 19

Jesus Sentenced to Be Crucified

19 Then Pilate took Jesus and had him flogged. 2 The soldiers twisted together a crown of thorns and put it on his head. They clothed him in a purple robe 3 and went up to him again and again, saying, “Hail, king of the Jews!” And they slapped him in the face.

4 Once more Pilate came out and said to the Jews gathered there, “Look, I am bringing him out to you to let you know that I find no basis for a charge against him.” 5 When Jesus came out wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe, Pilate said to them, “Here is the man!”

6 As soon as the chief priests and their officials saw him, they shouted, “Crucify! Crucify!”

But Pilate answered, “You take him and crucify him. As for me, I find no basis for a charge against him.”

7 The Jewish leaders insisted, “We have a law, and according to that law he must die, because he claimed to be the Son of God.”

8 When Pilate heard this, he was even more afraid, 9 and he went back inside the palace. “Where do you come from?” he asked Jesus, but Jesus gave him no answer. 10 “Do you refuse to speak to me?” Pilate said. “Don’t you realize I have power either to free you or to crucify you?”

11 Jesus answered, “You would have no power over me if it were not given to you from above. Therefore the one who handed me over to you is guilty of a greater sin.”

12 From then on, Pilate tried to set Jesus free, but the Jewish leaders kept shouting, “If you let this man go, you are no friend of Caesar. Anyone who claims to be a king opposes Caesar.”

13 When Pilate heard this, he brought Jesus out and sat down on the judge’s seat at a place known as the Stone Pavement (which in Aramaic is Gabbatha). 14 It was the day of Preparation of the Passover; it was about noon.

“Here is your king,” Pilate said to the Jews.

15 But they shouted, “Take him away! Take him away! Crucify him!”

“Shall I crucify your king?” Pilate asked.

“We have no king but Caesar,” the chief priests answered.

16 Finally Pilate handed him over to them to be crucified.

Pilate, a man of power and legal authority, allows himself to be swayed by a mob and condemns an innocent man to death. One wonders what would have happened if Pilate had stood up to the mob, the Sanhedrin, and the "community agitators". He would have gone down in History as a Great Man, instead of a weak, equivocating coward.

Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

This part of the Gospel of John, and the other three Gospels, is known as "The Passion". Artists have been struggling to depict this event for 2000 years, and the results are universally unsatisfactory. If any effort is made to respect the sensibilities of the audience, the depiction becomes stylized, tender, and unreal. Yet, if the artist goes closer to the brutal truth, the images are violent and sickening. Early Medieval Art was bloody and harsh, and pulled no punches. Then, during the Renaissance, with the fascination for The Greek Ideal, the edges got smoothed out and Jesus looked like a candidate for a Mr. Universe contest. And, then, of course, the Northern European Masters depicted a Jesus that looked like themselves, blond, handsome, and definitely NOT "Jewish".

With the advent of film-making, over 100 years ago, these permutations appeared again. From the silent film "King of Kings", through The full color version with Jeffrey Hunter as Jesus, The awful "Greatest Story Ever Told" with Max Von Sydow (The Scandinavian Jesus!), The magnificent 12 hour "Jesus of Nazareth" with Robert Powell from the great director Franco Zeferelli, to "The Passion of the Christ" by Mel Gibson which I could only watch ONCE because it was so painful to witness. While Mel Gibson's depiction was probably the most realistic of all the movie depictions, it also contained some personal visions of various saintly people merging with the Scripture, and someone not familiar with the Gospels might get them mixed up. But anyway...you get my point. One can't seem to be realistic without being brutal, because it WAS brutal.

What seems even more brutal to me (and haunted me as a child) was the TOTAL INJUSTICE of the whole thing! I have always had an over-developed sense of fairness and justice, and things like false accusations and persecution of the innocent made me MAD AS H...well you get the picture.

I am a "mature" woman now but I still get mad when I see truth and justice trampled. I guess I'll never get over it!

Pilate therefore went forth again, and saith unto them, Behold, I bring him forth to you, that ye may know that I find no fault in him.

The Jews answered him, We have a law, and by our law he ought to die, because he made himself the Son of God.

When Pilate therefore heard that saying, he was the more afraid;

And went again into the judgment hall, and saith unto Jesus, Whence art thou? But Jesus gave him no answer.

Then saith Pilate unto him, Speakest thou not unto me? knowest thou not that I have power to crucify thee, and have power to release thee?

Jesus answered, Thou couldest have no power at all against me, except it were given thee from above: therefore he that delivered me unto thee hath the greater sin.

And from thenceforth Pilate sought to release him: but the Jews cried out, saying, If thou let this man go, thou art not Caesar's friend: whosoever maketh himself a king speaketh against Caesar.

When Pilate therefore heard that saying, he brought Jesus forth, and sat down in the judgment seat in a place that is called the Pavement, but in the Hebrew, Gabbatha.

And it was the preparation of the passover, and about the sixth hour: and he saith unto the Jews, Behold your King!

But they cried out, Away with him, away with him, crucify him. Pilate saith unto them, Shall I crucify your King? The chief priests answered, We have no king but Caesar.

Then delivered he him therefore unto them to be crucified. And they took Jesus, and led him away.
