In 1692, when the original witch hunt took place, there were no witches in Salem, Mass. But the witch hunters should have waited a few centuries. When I visited Salem in 1986, I was told that it has highest number of self-proclaimed witches, per capita, of any city in the US.
One of my substitute teachers in Elementary school was a practicing witch from Salem. This was in the early 80’s. She was married to a local doctor (they eventually divorced) and that is how she ended up in our small Alabama town.
Despite her personal beliefs, she was a nice, well liked lady. When she was teaching, she never mentioned witchcraft or any other personal info. She was normal except for her all-black wardrobe, long dark hair and her fondness for snakes.
Thankfully, before her death a few years ago, she became a Christian.
Salem around Halloween is supposed to be a real freak show; they’ve capitalized on the nonsense from centuries ago.
