You have abandoned me in Purgatory!
From the writings of Don Giuseppe Tomaselli (1902-1989).
In this life of moral wretchedness, to justify our weaknesses, we say: my passions are so strong that I cant always resist them! Anyway, after sinning I rush back to Confession! Others say: I dont commit serious sins! I fail constantly in certain small things, which are unavoidable! There are those instead who sin more than I do and much more gravely!
When someone dies, we are want to exclaim: What a holy person! He did so much good! For sure he went to Heaven! On headstones the most illusory and flattering inscriptions present the dear departed as models of noble virtue.
We are simply what we are before God.
Man judges from a human viewpoint and frequently falls into error. The judgments of God instead are perfectly exact and we need to ponder on their rigor, in order to live as holy a life as possible and to come to the aid of those who have left this valley of tears, where they are paying in Purgatory for the wretched acts committed on this earth.
PURGATORY
The Yearning!
An almost eighty year old lady died on February 3rd 1944. My mother. I was able to gaze on her dead body in the Cemetery Chapel before the burial. As a Priest I thought to myself: You, woman, as far as I can judge, did not even once transgress gravely one of Gods commandments! And in my mind I went over her life.
In reality my mother was a great model and to a large extent I owe my priestly vocation to her. Every day she went to Mass, even in her old age - with the crown of her children. Her Holy Communion was daily. She never omitted the Rosary. She was so charitable that she even lost an eye while acting with exquisite charity towards a poor woman. She was so united to the will of God, that she asked me when my fathers dead body lay at home: What can I say to Jesus right now to please Him? - Lord may Your will be done!
On her death-bed she received the Last Rites with great faith. A few hours before expiring, suffering intensely, she repeated: O Jesus, Id like to ask you to lessen my sufferings. But I dont want to go against Your will; may Your will be done! This is the way the woman who brought me into the world died.
Basing myself on the concept of Divine Justice, paying little attention to the praises that acquaintances and Priests might make, I intensified the prayers for her soul: a great number of Masses, abundant charity, and, wherever I preached I exhorted the faithful to offer their Communions, prayers and good works for her soul.
And then the Lord allowed my mother to appear to me. I examined this phenomenon, discussing it with good Theologians and the conclusion was: It was a real apparition!
My mother had been dead for two years. She suddenly appeared in my room, in human form. She was very sad.
- You abandoned me in Purgatory!
- How long were you in Purgatory?
- Im still here! My soul is surrounded by darkness and I cant see the Light which is God! Im on the threshold of Heaven, near eternal bliss, and Im yearning with the desire to enter, but I cant! Ive said so many times: If my children knew of my terrible torment ah! How they would come to my aid!
-Why didnt you come before to tell us?
-It was not in my power.
-So you havent seen the Lord yet?
-As soon as I expired, I saw God, but not all of His Light.
-What can we do to free you immediately?
-I need only one Mass. The Lord allowed me to come and ask you for it.
-As soon as you are in Heaven, come and tell us!
-If the Lord allows it! What Light what splendor! Saying this the vision vanished.
Two Masses were celebrated and one day later she reappeared, saying: I am in Heaven!
After what I have reported, I say to myself: An exemplary Christian life, a great amount of prayers for her soul - and two and a half years in Purgatory! So much for the judgments of men!

And may Don Giuseppe Tomaselli rest in peace. At least we know his mother prayed for him from Heaven.

I’m a Christian (not Catholic), but if this story is indeed true, and she was such a life-long devout charitable person of faith and still ended up in Purgatory, what hope do the rest of us have.
Such stories bother me to no end, so again I ask, if this is true, what hope do the rwsr of have

For Man, it is impossible ... but for God, all things are possible.
We have the only hope anybody has: the saving Grace of Our Lord Jesus Christ.

A couple of days after my wife died in September, she came back late one evening and played a little joke on me (one that I played on her many times). I kid you not. Did not see her but the prank was really well done and occurred right in front of me.
Amazing story in the article. Say prayers for souls of dear departed every time you think of it. Also important to pray for souls of anonymous persons who have no one else to pray for them! How would you like to be in that position??

Two years in purgatory is actually an incredibly short amount of time especially when considered in the context of eternity ( which is so large we are completely unable to grasp it.)
If you believe the story to be true the answer is clear, confess your sins and live your life only for the will the triune God.

I worry about that also, but I know positively that God has given me graces many times when desperately needed (even when utterly despondent and despairing). Why would He do that if I were forsaken? Even if you havent had the experience of Gods Loving Hand, you need not fear hell if you believe and live as a Christian (purgatory is another matter).
Another odd thing (bit of grace?): A splitting headache I had all day just disappeared as I was writing these comments.

Libby, you have lived in this world long enough to know that no one is free of personal sin. Most people who die are a really mixed bag, not so bad but definitely not that holy. There is always a price to pay when we offend our Loving Father, always. The Church allows us to pay it forward so to speak since God is not bound by our linear time and all things are ever present to Him.
Satan wants you to think that you cannot attain holiness but that is what we are called to. The lady in this account was saved as are all those in Purgatory but seeing the Glory of Our Eternal Father was delayed until His Justice was served.

Thank you very much. Martha lived the first 17 years of her life in a convent in Bombay, attended the Tridentine Mass every day for most of that, and was a very sweet, loving person. As with most, she didnt deserve that stupid cancer.

I don't get it - HOW did he abandon her? And, why did she need only 1 Mass? He had been praying for her and offering Masses for her (" I intensified the prayers for her soul: a great number of Masses,...") and even asked others to pray for her. So, how was it that he abandoned her. What am I missing?

Purgatory IS HOPE. None of us deserve Heaven. We all deserve Hell. Purgatory is just a final theosis, a final cleansing, to make sure we are ready for Heaven.
