Liberal Commentator Claims Bible Encourages Abortion: ‘That’s a Fact’

Progressive pundit Cenk Uygur argued recently the Bible is pro-abortion.

The founder of The Young Turks — a far-left outlet — employed a passage from the Old Testament to make his case. Uygur, taking Numbers 5 out of context, claimed it’s “a fact” Scripture endorses abortion.

“You’re wrong about your Bible,” he said, speaking to Christians. “You’ve been misled; you’ve been lied to. Your religious and political leaders have kept you in ignorance. The Bible is actually pro-abortion — that’s a fact.”

Uygur went on to suggest abortion has never been a religious issue.

“It was never about the Bible,” he added, claiming, “the Bible says the opposite. It was always about controlling women.”

The liberal commentator quoted segments of Numbers 5 to make his point, reading:

The priest shall bring her and have her stand before the Lord. Then he shall take some holy water in a clay jar and put some dust from the tabernacle floor into the water. After the priest has had the woman stand before the Lord, he shall loosen her hair and place in her hands the reminder-offering, the grain offering for jealousy, while he himself holds the bitter water that brings a curse. Then the priest shall put the woman under oath and say to her, “If no other man has had sexual relations with you and you have not gone astray and become impure while married to your husband, may this bitter water that brings a curse not harm you. But if you have gone astray while married to your husband and you have made yourself impure by having sexual relations with a man other than your husband” —here the priest is to put the woman under this curse— “may the Lord cause you to become a curse among your people when he makes your womb miscarry and your abdomen swell. May this water that brings a curse enter your body so that your abdomen swells or your womb miscarries

That passage, though, is actually centered on an ancient Hebrew practice used if the husband was jealous — whether legitimately or illegitimately — of his wife’s suspected sexual interactions with another man.

If she was guilty, she would be cursed and unable to conceive or carry a child. If she had remained faithful and the husband’s jealousy was illegitimate, she would be fine.

Uygur also drew a nonsensical comparison between Saudi Arabia and Alabama, which he dubbed “Saudi Alabama” and encouraged them to leave the state if their abortion rights are in any way infringed.

“If you’re a woman, get out — get out before [Supreme Court Justice Brett] Kavanaugh and the other guys take away Roe v. Wade,” he said. “Otherwise, they’re going to take away your rights, and they’re going to put you in prison. That’s what they do in Saudi Arabia.”

I would say that murder is not a "religious" issue as such.

Just as an aside, Cenk Uygur is not merely a "progressive pundit", he is a Turkish denier of the Armenian genocide.
