How Could the Thief on the Cross Be Saved? - Ask Pastor Tim
I'll Be Honest ^ | 12/3/18 | Tim Conway

Posted on 12/03/2018 3:45:53 PM PST by OddLane

Some ask, “How was the thief on the cross saved if he didn’t live a righteous life?” Let us consider what this implies about how they believe a person is declared right before God.

Original question: Please clarify this for me. Regarding the theif on the cross. How do you compare his salvation with ours? I mean, he did not live a good life at all. He did not show any fruit of repentance. He did not live right, yet Jesus saved him anyway.

How was Jesus able to save him when we are clearly instructed to live right and to turn from sin? As I understand it, he was the only one in scripture who had this deathbed salvation so we can’t rely on that but you know what I mean?

???Didn't go through a priest????

???

Christ IS a priest. And not only "a" priest, but the One priest, the High Priest.

We are a holy nation, a nation of priests.

We all participate in priesthood, in related but not identical ways. I am not, for instance, an ordained, ministerial priest, but I AM member of the Body of Christ.

And He is our priest.

Everybody knows that.

You might as well claim that the thief was saved without the Mystical Body of Christ. It simply makes no sense.

I'll pray for you. You pray for me. OK?

G'night good FReepers all.

Another point bro. Just my opinion, since I don’t specifically have scripture to back it up, only an educated opinion. I think we will be rewarded, for all the times we are filled with the Holy Spirit. I think we will be rewarded for all the good works we do, while filled with the Holy Spirit, for it is then, that our good works, truly are good works. Suppose?

“He didn’t appeal to Mary, who was right there, to “put in a good word” to Jesus.

“He didn’t wholly devote himself to Mary....or appeal to her in any way.

“The lesson of the thief’s confession and appeal to Christ, and only Christ, is one to look to.

......

Christ didn’t spend long in Hell. He went and declared victory! I believe the second the thief drew his last breath He saw Jesus face to face waiting for him with open arms. The same glorious sight I will see when I depart the Earth

“I think we will be rewarded for all the good works we do, while filled with the Holy Spirit, for it is then, that our good works, truly are good works. Suppose?“

Everything done through our old, adamic nature is as filthy rags.

Everything done from the new Life of Christ expressing itself in and through us is rewarded.

So yes, amigo, you are correct.

He will have the crown of life. I also believe it wasn’t easy to speakin defense of Jesus particularly given the pain and agony the their was feeling. It would have been much easier to treat Jesus as the other thief did. His testimony was so strong and decisive that the Holy Spirit recorded it for all history. I believe that will get a major reward at the bema seat. Have any of us made so bold a proclamation of the Gospel in such difficult circumstances?

Where is Paradise? And how do we reconcile John 20:17 when He talks to Mary on Easter (and therefore two-three days after the conversation with the thief) and tells her He has not yet ascended to His Father? Wouldn’t Paradise include where the Father is?

Whatever happened to *one Lord, one faith one baptism*?

Just how many baptisms do you all claim to have anyways?

Baptism of Desire Baptism of Blood

Unknown "baptisms" in Scripture.

They, like so many other Catholic things, are found nowhere in Scripture, but are purely a man-made fabrication by Roman Catholicism.

His (the thief’s) death on the cross was his penance.

What a crock.

No Catholic priest told him to go and get himself crucified to get forgiveness for his sins.

And I seriously doubt he volunteered for it.

He was being executed for crime. That is NOT penance.

I closed my first wife's eyes in 2004.

We had SUCH discussions before she went home and I was acutely aware of her for the few hours she was not "with us".

The question posed was concerning his salvation .... was he saved.

It came from (imo) a Catholic perspective, which is why the thread deteriorated into salvation/works/rewards.

I don’t think that the thief died before Jesus.

The soldiers came to break the legs of the criminals, which means they were still alive. They did it to force death by suffocation.

But when they got to Jesus, they saw that He was already dead.

I honestly think WE, who are with them, are in their world of transition more than they are in ours.I noted this when ever I left the hospital. ...and when I returned to her room...in those final days.. Such a peace and quietness in the air that was palatable.

I guess you can’t define it unless you’ve walked in that ‘valley of death’ with a loved one. But every word matters as much as every breath and you are so tuned into where they are.

There is little to nothing in scripture to indicate what kind of life the thief led, except Yeshua’s words: “This day thou shall be with me in Paradise.

Except that he was being crucified between two robbers, or thieves.

He did NOT lead a righteous life.

Those words indicate he must have been obedient to the Father’s commandments, Just as Yeshua’s words to the Christians in Matthew 7:21-23 indicate that they were disobedient.

Like *Thou shalt not steal*?

You just can't let go of your works abased salvation, can you?

Jesus did NOT tell him he was going to be with Him in paradise based on the righteous life the thief led.

It was purely and simply salvation based on faith alone.
