Heck, Francis seized on that initial indictment of Pell, as Pell had just initiated an investigation of Bergoglio's shady Vatican finances. Francis promptly sent the Cardinal back to Australia to be tried by Francis' secular wolves.
Cardinal Pell scoured out the "pink palace" seminaries in his diocese. He opposed politicians who were pushing LGBT and abortion-rights extremism. He championed religious brothers and nuns known for traditional holiness, not SJW's.
Probably his fatal misstep was launching an independent audit of Vatican departments' finances and the Vatican Bank itself by PricewaterhouseCoopers. Within months PWC´s investigation was permanently suspended by Pope Francis himself --- and the far-left political establishment in Melbourne dug up these "historic charges" on which Pell had already been tried and let go.
In sum, he made a lot of enemies with the Australian Left and with entrenched Italian red-hats (Deepa Ecclesia Swampus Maximus).
News coverage of the trial itself was banned, and the prosecution demanded that a gag-order be instated to prevent Pell and his lawyer from discussing it in public! Does that sound legit??
I am praying his legal appeal will triumph.

We in the US aren’t familiar with the names of priests that were notorious for abuse in Australia. George Risdale, was probably the most notorious and Cardinal Pell had shared a home with him at one time and accompanied Risdale to trial and that is the big reason so many in Australia will never believe Cardinal Pell. This is just the side of the story we don’t hear as much over here. Good point! Juries can be just as arbitrary, prejudiced and emotional as 2000 years ago.
For Pete’s sake (pun intended), if you don’t even know Cardinal Pell is NOT homosexual and is KNOWN for his chaste and thoughtful way of life, then you surely don’t understand the complex and politicized details of this case going back many years. Pell is 100% innocent.
I have no idea if he is guilty or not.
But I do find it is interesting that these old charges just happened to be pushed at a time when Pell was cleaning up the financial shennanigans by some in the Vatican and trying to clean up the Vatican Bank.
That’s a fact.
If the right kind of powerful people wanted you destroyed, and produced witnesses against you, possibly through bribery or intimidation, leading to your conviction for a crime you didn’t commit ... if that were to happen, I would hope for your sake that the appeal process you seem eager to deny Pell would then be available to you.
I’ve never believed the accusations against Pell. There’s nothing in his background that suggests he’s a homosexual. 20% of accusations against Catholic priests have been found to be false. The usual motive is a payday, though that’s not the only reason. A man dying of AIDS years ago accused Cardinal Bernardin of Chicago of abuse but retracted before their deaths.
