Cardinal Mahony, who used to be in charge of the Los Angeles archdiocese, abrogated the obligation to attend Mass on this holyday some years ago. It remains in effect in all of southern California, as the archbishop is also metropolitan of a larger Province of several dioceses.
It is only proper that these bishops do away with these holydays of obligation because the time required in observance of them takes away from the bishops’ more important tasks of global warming and illegal immigration.
