I am absolutely baffled by whatever motivated the Cardinals to choose this guy. Given that they wanted "a Pope from the New World," there were plenty of others to choose from.

Moreover, South America is more European than it is New World. Evidently it was unthinkable to choose a Canadian or an American. Only someone with a dictatorial mindset was acceptable.

Well, it has been said that God writes straight with crooked lines. I'm waiting to see.

Yeah ... they could have picked Wuerl. Or McCarrick. Or Cupich. Or Tobin. Perhaps the horror wouldn't have been quite so obvious ...

Maybe the only way to expose the rot was to stick the worst possible candidate in the Chair of Peter and let him show his true colors.

He was marketed, quite effectively, as a Great Reformer [tm]. He’s not a “reformer”; he’s emblematic of what real reform needs to fix.
