ALBUQUERQUE Monday, January 14, 2019IMMEDIATE RELEASENew Mexico is one of the states listed by the U.S. Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) as having widespread flu outbreaks and high Influenza-like Illness (ILI) Activity.
Due to the severity of the flu season, the archdiocese will be taking the following steps in regards to the celebration of Mass:
During the Sign of Peace, instead of shaking hands or hugging, as is practiced in some parishes, it would be best to simply nod your head and avoid bodily contact.

I have to be candid...I really don't like the Sign of Peace. It has turned in to a spectacle. A parish I used to attend had a Priest that spent (I'm not kidding) 3-4 mins shaking hands with everyone on the Alter and in the first few rows....it was like a rock show!
In NYC, Fr. George Rutler routinely skipped that part of the weekday Novus Ordo mass. I loved it, and perhaps more importantly I was able to remain prayerful and solemn.

Please note, many liturgists believe the reception of the Consecrated Host in the hands is considered more appropriate liturgically than receiving the Consecrated Host on the tongue. Schismatic.
Most liturgists do not believe this, and Church Law does not indicate this.

I lead the a-cappella singing at the daily 8:30, and I always start counting slowly to 10 at the beginning of the "handshake" and then start the "Lamb of God."
I sing softly (it's a small chapel) so people don't feel they're being hustled along. They just know they're done.

The celebrant of any Mass in the Archdiocese of Santa Fe is to encourage the reception of the Consecrated Host in the hands. Please note, many liturgists believe the reception of the Consecrated Host in the hands is considered more appropriate liturgically than receiving the Consecrated Host on the tongue.Absolute B.S.

Parishioners are not to leave their pew. Just reverently greet a couple or three people. Then bow your head and close your eyes. You’ll know when it’s all over.

I’m wondering who the Bishop of Albequerque is. He’s got a couple of liturgical abuses in his suggestions.
For example, the priest is the only person authorized to extend his hands in the “Orans” position.
Everyone else should just fold their hands and bow their heads during the Lord’s Prayer. It is also a liturgical abuse to hold hands during the Our Father.

Liturgists are quite a bit like HR Managers. They think their job is the most important, yet nobody else thinks so, but everyone obeys out of fear of upsetting the boss.
